Well, the day started out $hitty

I feel for you Fred , now have you done your sums as in what is the cost to fix the old beast for as I said before second hand Rockets are two a penny, I would think hard before putting tooooo much into a bike that is only worth $4000

Unfortunately for me, I'm really partial to the silver engined bikes. That really narrows the field. I'd buy yours but it's got the same miles on it as mine. A ticking time bomb ? Who knows. Lately the newer bikes are shyting their trannys more frequently than the old ones.

They had a Blessing of the Bikes in Grundy Va....deep in coal country.....not a dry patch of ground anywhere.....

To much lemon pledge. ;)

Now that is just funny. At least you still have your since of humor.

Sorry for your luck.

What would have ticked me off would have been all my Harley friends stopping on the side of the road asking what s up.

Humble pie never tastes good.

I do know that any sort of ring retainer, circlip or the spiral kind, need to be installed the correct way.
When they make them they have one sharp edge and one slightly rounded.
The rounded edge has to face against the direction of force, so the sharp edge holds in the groove.

Jesus after round two i would have left her on the side of the road and walked home... ;) Anyway nice little project if your into that thing..

Alternatively, if you fly me to your house I'll fix it for nothing more than room/board/beer and then I'll do you the added favour of riding around the US on it for a month or so just to make sure it's safe enough for you ride again...

Not a bad offer, IMHO.
Also the Hunty humor will asuage your depression!:D:inlove

I'm sure I'll find more when I get er' cracked open. Not really mad at it anymore. Just a mechanical thing that broke. I don't like the idea of mixing new and 75,000 mile gears so I'm still thinking I'll buy an engine out of a wreck, and use the entire tranny. My money is still on a failed snap ring. That will piss me off if all this heartache is caused by the failure of a 10 cent part. If that turns out to be the problem, I'm definitely going to look into alternative snap rings. Perhaps something like this

I want to read up on what they use in super high powered drag bike transmissions.

Milling the groove deeper on the shaft has been kicked around as a possible solution too...I just wonder if there's enough meat left on it given that its hollow??
