GEARFOX BUCKED!

I would like Triumph to come clean on the 'Circlip' / Gearbox issue. Identify the cause of the problem and either rectify it, or give guidence of to how to avoid it.

In my mind, it's either a design fault (and there have been a few), a manufacturing fault, or an assembly issue.

When 'The Rocket On Two Wheels' works, it's the best ride ever! I am very lucky and proud to be riding Triumph and a Rocket, but my confidence has been sorely rocked. I need support and reassurance, not platitudes.

I totally agree My R3T when it was going well I must say it was one of the best experience owning and riding the bike But ever so slowly the noisy clunky gearbox drove my Forum induced paranoia to the point I was riding expecting a catastrophic failure at any time and one ride (in controlled conditions) without a helmet I heard the dreaded pre lockup clatter of a ready to implode gearbox, enough for this old boy I gave the bike to my son to fix and bought another Sports Touring bike but this time with Japanese reliability and quality control I will miss the Rocket but love the silky smooth gearbox/engine of the new bike

I doubt you'll find many rockets with the level of maintenance mine gets, not to be a *****or arrogant, but I'm collector level meticulous about it.

It still broke.

Oil every 1-2k miles.
Coolant flushes done at 3000 and 6000 miles.
4 rear tires in 8600 miles
3rd set of brake pads
All new brake fluid
3rd Battery
Cables checked and lined twice in 8600
Fork seals and oil swapped at 6000 miles

Trans still died so...

Yes things blow up. We all know that, especially if one hots them up or consistently uses them hard, or even abuses them. SOME things seem to consistently fail with a pattern, which is likely to be a fault with either manufacture or assembly. Lets see now, ZZR600 inlet valve recession, umm, VTR1000 regulators, shovel head Harleys, XS1100 second gears, Honda XR250 radial valve head cracking, CBR1000 cam chain wear, RGV250 power valves snapping off, etc, oh hang on what about the Rocket three trans being a bit hit and miss. Sorry but I think ken's paranoia is rather sad, not funny.

it is funny to read but not so funny if its yourself it is sad ,as I have mentioned I do a lot of long rides with my wife as pillion crossing some remote stretches of our big Country where you don't have phone reception and infrequent traffic if you break down in these areas particularly on a bike you have **** all chance of any one stopping to help even bikes are reluctant to stop in the these troubled times, I can look after myself but will not risk my wife being stranded by a unreliable bike,so bye bye Rocket

I have had quiet a few British bikes over the years mostly clapped out 2nd hand Triumphs and even a Matchless I expected them to be only moderately reliable but buying a new Triumph and correctly servicing and sensibly riding it I expected it to be good for a bit more than 46000Ks before major problems, I have in my younger days had big Japanese 4s, Suzuki GS 1000s Cooley replica, XJ900 and FJ1200 Yamahas
and a beautifully reliable and under rated Suzuki GSX1400 (I should have kept it) none of these bikes had any major problems and were given a jolly good rodgering at times ,during this time a 1984 Harley 1340 Shovel Super Glide 2 that was very reliable in its close to 160000Ks (I still have it in the shed ) so as a reasonably experienced owner 53 years of living and breathing motorcycles I feel I am as qualified as most to have an idea on motorcycle reliability or lack of it or did I just get a Monday Morning or Friday afternoon Bike

I think you wore it out working on it and beating the snot out of the poor thing 4 TIRES in 8600 miles thats a true sign of motorcycle SODOMY so all I can say is its all good as long as your having fun SO stop whining its your fault LOL

SO your Rocket didnt fail BUT you thought that it might so you sold it to your son so it would break while he owns it ? NOW thats interesting did you give him a warranty ? I have put over 40,000 on Rockets with no breakdowns so Its one of the best bikes out there IMO
