Triumph Quit Ignoring Your Ignition Problems

Found the problem and seems like it is a best case scenario for me. The bottom wires heading into this connector are causing the issue. This evening, I'll pull them all out and rebuild the connector. I'll put the EB in while I'm at it.

Well I suppose this was the next thing to go. I had just replaced the Throttle Position Sensor because of the OTHER known issue (high idle) and went to work. Shortly after arriving at work, I had to ride to another location. I turned on the ignition and nothing. I did all of the usual things like check battery terminals, fuses, etc. I didn't have time to mess with it, so I called for a ride. I stayed busy all day, so I had to ask someone to cover for me so I could figure out what was wrong with my bike before it was too late to call for a tow. I hadn't mentioned before that the nearest dealer is about 2 hours away and that's how far I had to go for the TPS. Anyway, I put the key in, turned it, and everything worked. I left work early and rode it home because I no longer trusted it to get me there. I tried for the rest of the day to recreate the problem, but couldn't. I ended up having to take my car on a trip I had planned the next day because I sure as hell wasn't going to trust it to take me 7 hours from home and leave me stranded. I'm greatful to the r3owners forum for at least letting me know I'm not the only one, but do I really have to come out of pocket another $75 for a known issue? This is why I have steered clear from Harley for so many years and it seems that Triumph is earning the same reputation.

I was wrong...it's actually shorting within the ignition terminal inside the key column. :(

just a thought if it were me i would steer clear of the eb set up till after i solved all of the problems.

That's the plan: get the ignition wiring squared away first. But then, while she's opened up and sitting on the lift, may as well take care of the EB, PCV/AT, and blinker mirror connections. I'll let you know how it goes. Plan is to drill out the ignition column bolts on Thursday. I've seen a few posts about going "keyless"...seriously considering that, if I can find suitable bits here.

I'm wondering if the '14 R3 touring needs the EB relay kit installed I don't hear a relay for the headlight when I turn on ignition switch but do hear a relay when I turn on the dirving lights.

Have you got heated grips fitted? Checking through the accessories on my R3T it looks like the driving lights are wired with their own relay (if someone more technically minded than me can confirm this takes the load ff the ignition that would be great); I have just fitted the EB Relay after my second ignition switch replacement and can only link this to the fact that I was riding through the colder/ wetter months and had the heated grips on for prolonged periods of time - EB Heated Grips bypass/ relay on order.

I had this problem but it was fixed two weeks ago by the AA. It was the white wire that goes into the ignition block that was burning out. The AA guy just bypassed the terminal block and fitted a new white wire, the bikes perfect now.

No heated grips on my ride.

My ignition switch is my problem gremlin that is causing my headaches getting the R3STD back on the road. I thought it got changed out when I had the upgrade kit put in years ago. It wasn't. It was obviously an oversight but I have another on the way. I sure hope I can get it all sorted out before next weekend. Otherwise MB may be flying up there without me!!!
