Sure enough same thing, I tightened the bolts to 10Nm per manual (they weren't) and will dm @Journeyman to take him up on the o-ring offer. Is it really necessary to pull the harness out as the manual states? I'll need to make a custom shorty 8mm socket to properly get behind the starter motor boot.

My hybrid fix with one larger o-ring and one stock size finally failed. I just the other day installed two of the stock size as Triumph intended. We'll see how long they last. I wonder how many people have this leak and don't realize it.

Have you tried cutting a custom gasket or using goop for the mating flat surfaces? But then again that might cause other problems.

You're reading my mind. I have thought about it. If I get another failure after installing two at spec o-rings I’ll give that a try. Should work I would think

Once I pulled out the gear position sensor I noticed some whitish/tan gunk in the bottom of the opening, and of course I forgot to take a picture. So I wiped it out pretty good, removed the existing o-rings, wiped down the round of the sensor, applied the new o-rings and some P-80 and torqued the bolts down. It's a super easy fix, I just had to grind down a 8mm socket so I could fit the wrench on the rear bolt behind the starter motor boot. I let it run for a little while and once the residual lubricant had seeped out it felt pretty dry. I will know more how it's holding up tomorrow after I ride it to work.
Recently, after riding it to work, I had my friend hold a white piece of paper in front of the exhaust while I revved it a few times and there was no trace of anything. When I start the bike cold and I stick my finger up the hole it's just wet until the condensation dries up, then feels a little greasy for a moment and then chalky dry after that and I never see smoke. So I'm just accepting whatever is going on as normal. Probably wouldn't matter anyhow since I put the Penner tune on it recently despite my warranty not running out until next February, those throttle restrictions were a nuisance and the bike now feels like it's been liberated.

So, how did it hold up? All fixed? I think I have the same problem-I hope tomorrow I have some time to remove the starter cover and see whether that’s where the leak is coming from.

That's an interesting point, for sure.

I think I will make a point of asking about this subject when my bike goes in for it's annual service at my local dealer.

I hold my hand up and say that I have never checked my oil level between my annual service intervals.
I don't cover big miles each year like some folk on here.
The dealership has never brought to my attention of me having low oil level when they do their checks annually, but that doesn't necessarily mean a great deal, unless any such volume of oil loss is really obvious.

I think however, that if there appears to be a fair few of us on here claim to be having oil loss issues, it certainly warrants an open discussion with the techies at the dealership when I take my bike in this summer.

I've only ridden it just under 100mi and so far so good. Since I used that P-80 as specified in the manual the excess behind the last o-ring has seeped out so it feels slightly greasy but not oily and doesn't smell like oil either. I've ridden it through the entire rev range and the fact that it's holding even at max rpms is promising. @Journeyman was kind enough to send me 4 o-rings just in case.

That’s excellent news! I took out the cover yesterday and indeed the seepage is coming from the bottom of the gear position sensor. I’ve tightened up the bolts and ordered 2 gaskets off ebay. I am glad that this seems to be an easy fix. Thanks for your reply! Maybe one day I will explore that route 49 - I heard is quite beautiful.

People from the bay area come out here for the riding, it's quite nice to live right in the middle of it.
When you fix yours take a 8mm socket and grind it down so it fits on the back bolt.
