Triumph Quit Ignoring Your Ignition Problems

ignition switch problem?

I think I just joined the ignition switch problem club. Been reading posts on the subject all day. I hit the kill switch by accident yesterday while riding, (probably unrelated) turned it back on and it ran fine till about an hour later. I turned the bike off for a minuet and tried to restart and nothing. Turned the key on and off and had power. Later on riding straight (as opposed to turning) and the gas light comes on for a second. Happened twice. Then all the Pretty lights came on at once and power failed and came right back up. Got home ok but really peeved that I'm going to miss Daytona. Anyone know if this has become an official recall? Will the dealer have access to an eastern beaver bypass or do I have to order one and get it installed? I'm not too keen on specialized wiring.

Thanks to everyone for all the posts for this bike, I have certainly learned a lot.

you may be lucky like Richard and it may only be down at the main connecter under the tank you will need to lift tank and trace wire harness back from ignition Switch and you may also be lucky to find it is here where you have overheated wires or you may be unlucky and have to replace ignition switch, either way the very first thing you should be ordering is an EB kit so once you have fixed your ignition it won't happen again,
Hope you have good luck and will only need to make up new conecters at main harness
Cheers
Hans

You need the EB kit 9or your own home made version) to take excess current off switch. Since you are having problems you also need to check out switch and fix any problems. You can bypass switch - instructions are on site somewhere.

Called the dealer today, they said there is an upgrade for the 08's but before mine was built and mine should be fine. They checked for recalls or issues with my vin #. Got home, took off the tank and started wiggling wires. Long story short, it's the main plug. Didn't melt in any way or get hot. What is the process for changing this plug and should I get the EB kit anyway? Do I just clip the wires and stick them into the new plug? I pressed the starter and the headlights did indeed go out when starting. Never had a reason to notice before reading posts on the subject.

before replacing the plug try cleaning with spray on (CRC make a good one) Co2 contact cleaner then aply some Dielectric grease into the plug contacts you may find that is all it needs.
And most certainly buy the Eastern Beaver kit it should be a compulsary Upgrade purchase for all Rockets,..... Better still Triumph should have done it right the first Time around, I made my own before the ignition switch or plug gave me any trouble, I have since made 6 others for some of the Aussies, it is easy to make if you know how to wire up a set of Driving light relay I am about to make one for Skips triple headlight set up and I can draw you a diagram of what to do if you want to make one yourself

Headlight bypass or not?

Hey Guys, Looking for advise. When I read all of the posts about ignition failures, I was freaking out
I purchased an 35w HID headlight to install.
After installing the new light is the bypass still needed, or is it best not to gamble and finish the job?

I have the Eastern Beaver kit for sale in the classifieds if you decide to go that route. It has never been used.

Eastern Beaver Headlamp Relay Kit with Lo Cutoff with Switch (fixes ignition switch overheating issue) - R3Owners Classifieds

Thanks guys for all the great information on this thread. I was finally convinced by HansO's posts to go with the EB.

I purchased the H4 Dual Relay Kit w/Lo Cut - item # H4DRK-R3-LC, Main Leads Connection: Fuseholder. Whatever that all means? I also got the Handlebar Switch, Item # HBSW.

Being an electrical drongo, I just finished watching my brother do the install, which took him a couple hours. We also installed a couple of HL 79564 5.75" Round ECE High/Low Beam Headlamp-No Bulb from Susquehanna. These are supposed to much improve the light beam cast forward by the H4s.

It does look like a brightness improvement in the garage. I won't know for sure until spending some time out on the highway at night. Because of the unscientific install of both at the same time, I likely won't know which item caused the most improvement.
