Dumb question. Will the Thunderbird Speedo with Tach built in plug and play on the R3T? They look identical except for the tach being where the gas gauge is.

That would be cool if it did. I'm told the signal is INSIDE the ECU, was NOT brought out for the Tourer.

That leaves running an aftermarket unit of some sort with a pulse sensor on one of the plug wires.

@barbagris , I followed that link, and don't see any reference to PRISM.

I'd be interested in ordering one, and putting on the Tourer (you said you have it on a Guzi) if it'd work.

Suggestions ?

Thank you.

Looking at J&P Cycles, a note with some of the tachometers says, "Will work with dual fire systems. Single fire systems will require the installation of an adapter, included. Will not work with magnetos."

Might someone interpret this for me, and tell me where the R3 fits in that context, please ?

The PRISM series from SMITHS are NOT - I REPEAT NOT waterproof. I knew up front and my Guzzi NEVER sees rain.

I am a BIG fan of KOSO. They make gauges for other gauge "marques" (Drift for example) and also one or two bike mfrs (MV.Augusta for example).
VERY MUCH waterproof. See if any suits your taste. Most are VERY configurable - so much so I muddled a rev counter to read off as a speedo.

Rockets are single-fire - dual fire system is where a single coil is used to fire two different cylinders at 360 deg intervals, with the opposite cylinder having 'wasted spark' at the top of the exhaust cycle, vs the primary cylinder which is firing at top of compression stroke.

If reviewing these types of tachs, it appears most are aimed at the Hardly-able, Son market which predominantly use dual fire (wasted spark) systems.
That means the tach sees a pulse every 360 deg revolution, whereas a single-fire system sees one pulse every 720 deg (two revolutions)
So - if you connected it to an R3 without an adapter, display would read half speed.

Now - on further review, I found that most of these 'adapter' kits (that are supplied included or at additional charge, depending on brand) simply multiplex signals to opposite coils.
That is all well and good for a twin, but on a triple, does not work so well, as the spacing between pulses is not going to be symmetrical.
Reading some reviews, this asymmetric signal creates jumpy display on many bikes.

I came across this device however which would be a good solution to adapt ANY tach that has been designed for dual-fire, to single-fire use

What you would want is a frequency doubler, so that it outputs two pluses for every one it sees on input.

The barons tach look promising, at least aesthetically, coming with a decent-looking bar-mount pod, and in black or white face and 2" or 3" sizes

This is a pretty neat mount!

They list M/C covers for various Japanese models - would think one of them would be same fit as the Triumph
Maybe if you give the dimensions (overall size and spacing between screws) , their tech support could identify which would suit?

Hang on - I'm off to look for that flying pig.
Allow me a "word of warning" regarding "ACEWELL" I saw one go on the fritz within 10mins of use last week.
They supplied an inductive lead you wind around the HT lead - erratic does NOT come anywhere near it.
Just looked at the instructions for my Koso - 2stroke 1,2,3,4 cyl - 4 stroke 1.2.3.4.5.6.8.10.12 cyl.

Why not?
It's just a Nissin 5/8" master cylinder - these things usually have cross-marque applications

I don't KNOW that there will be one to fit, but worth checking
All moot if no-one likes that mount anyway! :D
