Today is August 31st, 25 days in the shop!! I called the dealer yesterday and their tech said it's still on hold as they couldn't find the broken missing piece of the spring. I repied it has to be somewhere in the engine or transmission since they share the same oil supply. Seems the dealer has poorly trained techs who might just be inexperienced and underpayed. After hanging up I got on this forum and copied and emailed them the picture of the removed sump cover, explaining to them where they might find the piece. Then they offer (while the bike is down) to do the 20,000 mile service on it 1,700 miles early. Maybe to get some of my money they're losing on this warranty job, who knows. Kind of leary of letting them touch anything else though!! I don't know how much longer this will take or how much worse this will get. UNHAPPY!!!!!!!!

The dealer needs to get off their ass and drop the oil pan. You need to talk with the Triumph rep and start pushing.

This is a classic example of why I won't go to the dealers for anything!

As I recall the 20K service isn't all that much. They already have to change the oil obviously, so there isn't a whole lot more to do. Check the manual and see what's involved.

BTW, go buy your oil someplace and take it to them. Otherwise they'll charge you way too much.

Just got another Email from the dealer

Looks like Triumph is finally starting to get off the pot so-to-speak. here is the email they sent me:

DENNIS,
TRIUMPH HAS GIVEN US THE OK TO START DISASSEMBLING TO LOCATE THE BROKEN OFF END OF THE SPRING. A WARRANTY PRIOR HAS BEEN STARTED AND THE LABOR TO DISASSEMBLE WILL BE COVERED BY YOUR WARRANTY. THE BIKE WILL GO BACK ON THE RACK LATE THIS AFTERNOON. I WILL SEND YOU, AND TRIUMPH, OUR FINDINGS.
THANK YOU,
KRISTINE

Want to See the Parts

I also want to see the spring and the broken-off piece of it before I sign-off on this job. I need to know they got that piece out of my engine or tranny. Hopefully I will get that call from Thiel's this week that it's done. Wednesday will be 28 days without a motorcycle in my garage.

easy find if its not in the front of the engine and sump I would drop the sump it will be there its too large to go thru the two screens if it make it there.

below is a shot of the front screen right under the filter

it has a cover on it as with the one in the rear under the outpt drive helical gears.

there are two of the little pockets that also catch debris and never get drained during a oil change
the front one under the clutch basket

the rear one is on the right rear as you sit on the bike

the only other places it could get rapped is in the casting troughs

Hope this helps ease your mind a bit:)

Thanks for the Pictures

Those pics will help me or some other owner whenever this pesky detent spring should ever break again. As for right now it's the dealer's turn to do it under that two year drivetrain warranty. I won't need to see the separated bottom oil sump cover at his shop this time, just the broken spring and the piece of it he removed just to make sure he removed it. I'm not taking any chances.

Latest Email from my Dealer

Got this one this morning, September 4th. Tommorrow marks 4 weeks in the shop. Here's the email:

DENNIS,
JUST WANTED TO GIVE YOU AN UPDATE. WE PULLED THE CLUTCH COVER THE OTHER DAY TO BEGIN THE INSPECTION PROCESS FOR DAMAGE AND WORKED ON IT UNTIL THE CLOSE OF BUSINESS THAT DAY. THE BIKE IS SCHEDULED TO GO BACK ON THE RACK THIS AFTERNOON TO CONTINUE DISASSEMBLY. THE BELLY PAN AND RELATED COMPONENTS WILL BE REMOVED. I’LL LET YOU KNOW OUR FINDINGS.
THANK YOU,
KRISTINE
