Pretty sure triumph have more experience than anyone else...and they fix the fault under warranty, which would not happen if they deemed the breakdown attributable to operator error.

Every once in a while i un-ignore...It seems some members cut and paste one comment repeatedly???

Wonder whats going on I asked Triumph about gearbox problems and they say there is not a recall or defect with the Rockets other than the older pre 2009 bikes that we are aware of

That'll be what that noise was, then :notworthy::notworthy:
A circlip was out of it's slot, a few broken teeth and this.
Is there anything, apart from the obvious broken parts, that I should consider replacing / upgrading? I've heard mention of Detent Spring and stronger Clutch Springs. Water Pump?
I read some advice regarding a 2nd gear 'update' kit from Triumph, as a more cost effective replacement. I am told that it isn't available in the UK, as they haven't any record of any 2nd gear problems o_O
(mine started with 2nd making a rattling noise).
Also, is there any advice for the running-in of new gears, please? Rev range for 500 miles?
Cheers!

your bike will have all the updated parts already. Things replaced when my trans had issues:

Everything on the output and input side, shaft gears, spacers etc.
All shift forks
Shift Drum
Pretty much everything top to bottom in the trans was replaced.
Stator, because its already open so why not?!

Guidance given to me was: Be gentle the first few heat cycles, so the first few rides. Then stop thinking about it and enjoy.

PERSONALLY: I think you should do a 500 mile oilchange after work is complete, but a lot of people don't think so and don't bother, but I am of the opinion that anytime a major component is replaced, a 500 mile change is a good idea to remove the contaminants in the motor.

Yep if I was into the transmission I would install one of the aftermarket 4th gears even if mine was not like the picture above.

Oh and I've seen guys break 4th on early bikes heck frocket did it twice. It's not really happened enough to call it a flaw. His real problem was when he hit a roo :)

Yeah, I told Carpenter, anything even remotely possible to not be 100%, replace it, hate to do it twice, if I remember, billet 4th gear was only about $150, but don't quote me. He only had 10 made, hopefully he still has one. Mine started with a skip in 2nd gear.

The dealer in New Orleans (only dealer in Louisiana), told me they get 2 or 3 Rockets in a year, and most were electrical problems. I know Eddie over at Carp works on way more Rockets than that. Now if you need a Vespa fixed, take it to the shop in New Orleans.

My dealer is a great guy, great salesman, treats me right on parts, but as for having knowledgeable mechanics, uh uh. Problem when I picked it up everything they ever did, minor, but inexcusable, haven't been there for work in years. My buddy has 40 years experience as a motorcycle mechanic, used to have his own shop, dealer knows him, when he applied he offered him $12/hr, which explains why he has no good mechanics.
