If I am going a rocket gearbox, which is not often really, I make the shims needed. The gears often have too much end play. Ten thou end play is ten thou less dog engagement. It all adds up.

Early diagnoses on my Rocket gearbox it looks like some of the gears have not meshed completely and excessive end play is evident, also the cam chain tensioner was "almost" worn down to the metal,some shims and a new cam tensioner so far we may have caught it just in time a good tip is to ride your bike (on a closed road under controlled conditions) without your helmet because if you are a hearing impaired like me you will not hear the early warning sounds with your helmet on
