The Official Rocket Across America IV Thread

I know it sounds a little selfish of me, but anywhere around the greater Chattanooga area is great. It is centrally located to Lynchburg and The Tail of the Dragon, all within an easy day ride. The roads around here are fantastic and have a little something for everyone to enjoy, from twisting mountain roads to longer more relaxed sweeping curves. Also Barber's Museum is great, and well worth the trip, that is a little longer ride from Chattanooga, it would require leaving eeeee'arly and getting back l'aaaate and not have a lot of time at the museum.

Maybe it's time to pick a day

Seems to be some interest in getting a date established, I would like to know myself. Maybe a poll should be set up for that. The May time would work, I thought that weekend after Labor Day was good but storms could be a challange.

The Tail of the Dragon area sounds good to me but we could firm up the location in the next couple of months. I am not to picky on the area, anywhere has better twisties than Nebraska! Like to get Flip there for the entertainment value!:D

I'm voting for May

How about staying around Asheville, NC, Waynesville, NC or Bryson City, NC?

Nearly equi-distant to Asheville, Pigeon Forge and the Dragon. So folks could whatever direction they wanted and still meet up with everyone at day's end.

We can ride the Dragon... ride through the Smoky Mountains... ride the Trail

Waynesville:
Comfort Inn
Days Inn
Ramada Inn

Bryson City:
Sleep Inn
Baymont Inn
Econo Lodge
Comfort Inn
Days Inn

Asheville, NC:
All types of accommodations

Ratboy,

With your local knowledge which of the three cities you suggested would you prefer? Maybe Wilbur can also add his local knowledge?

The last time I was in Asheville I got the impression it was a tad arty-farty!?!??!?!

Your input appreciated

Tony

Lets see.. Birmingham is 740 miles from the front porch, and Pigeon Leg is 992 miles...so if I go 120mph I could be in the former in 7 hrs, and the latter in 8 1/2 hrs, give or take, I'd have to stop for gas, food and scratch my nuts.:D

Snuff, You could save some time by bringing Mrs Snuff, she could feed you and perhaps even do some scratching enroute thus reducing your stoppage time:D

Just trying to be helpful!

I have stayed at this place a couple of times in the last two years. It is about 100 yards off the Blue Ridge Parkway, half way between Boone, NC and Asheville, NC. It is located right in the middle of some of the best riding country I have ever seen. I have ridden the Dragon and I will take it three times over the Dragon. Hwy 80 coming off the Parkway has some of the best twisties I have seen and much steeper than the Dragon.

What's good about it is, it's a good place to go out and back for the day. To Chimney Rock and Lake Lure, Mt. Mitchell, Boone, Asheville etc, This area is right in the middle of highest mountains in the Blude Ridge and Mitchell is the highest point east of the Mississippi. The scenery is the best you'll find anywhere east of the Mississippi and maybe in the country. Many lookouts.

The inn has a motorcycle lodge that has eight rooms which can be rented for a discount if all eight are rented ($60-65) per night. The prices for the other rooms are indicated in the link. There's a covered patio for a few bikes. It has an air compressor.

This place has a bar and a good restuarant with a free breakfast included in the room and it' a full breakfast.

For those who like the night life, this would not be the best place. It is pretty quiet and on the Parkway by itself. It's a relatively short ride into Robbinsville or a small town called Spruce Pine.

This is a great place to ride from if you want to see and visit the best sights in the Blue Ridge, but like I said, it is not a great place for the night life.

It seems like everyone has had a hard time being away from me since RAAIII in Eureka Springs..blah blah blah.:D
A start on RAAIV now is an great idear.

I'm not going to Pigeon Forge or Dollywood or Severeville. I can't stand plastic bull**** and traffic jams. I much prefer more rustic,..
I have to agree.

I have suggested regional rendezvous and the serious travelers meet for an annual in the central area. That could obligate Flipper and yourself; since NC/TN is too far for you :D I like the idea of a Dragon Rocket Awakening in early May. I look forward to a lower case rendezvous location. A smaller burg with plenty of Hooters :D
