TDSU or output shaft bearing problems

We have a Bearing outlet store specializes in nothing but bearings you can take it to them and they will match it up with A Timkin or a Burner just do not tell them it is for a motorcycle they will not sell it to you, strange something about insurance so I always tell them it's out of a piece of construction equipment they like that and asked one of you said about half the cost if not less
 
I agree, I think it would be crazy to put a triumph bearing back in. I have about 500 miles on it since the bearing replacement everything looks good so far.
 
I am glad to hear you are back on the road. I take it you are now a certified triumph mechanic, I got a mechanics manual right off the bat when I bought my bike. when my warranty ran out I just stopped in to visit the dealership the shop manager looked at me and said I know you're not here to have your bike worked on what's up, I told him I had just stopped to visit and he said hallelujah. I had the same bearing trouble that you had did you check your rear differential if that bearing got bad enough the in play seems to affect the bearing in the rear end it happened to mine they were to have fixed mine but did not, when I went back 2 months later we had all types of trouble after a couple of nasty e-mails a week later I got the call from dealership telling me to bring my bike over they had a rear differential for me install took a grand total of 30 min. from the time I got there till I was ready to pull out the door if you're bearing was not real bad you might not have any trouble with rear end just keep your eyes and ears open.
 
Triumph did give me a new final drive unit for free. So now I have a new bearing and final drive. Just flushed the oil out again and replace the oil filter, no particles so I think it is good to go now. Put about 500 miles on it so it seems OK, I just can not help worrying about the rest of the bearings in the engine. I still do not trust it yet.
 
bearing problems

Hi Travis.
I have an 06 standard with less than 10k miles on it and only had the bike for the last 7 weeks. Sounds like i have a bearing breaking up like yours. How many special tools did you have to make up to complete the job. I think I would also be happier repairing myself with an after market better part. Any help would be great. The local dealer is telling me he does not need to remove engine, they loosen the front bolts and drops the rear end of the engine down only

I sent a reply via email but will place this here for information to others. The special tools are simple to make or buy. Most were simply welding nuts and bolts together to make large allen tools. I see some possible issues with simply dropping the rear of the motor down, the drive shaft connects to the output shaft via a spline connection, either the motor has to go forwards or you have to remove the swing arm like I did. You also will have to remove the radiator no matter what. Just make sure to mark all electrical connectors and remove the oil pressure switch (I broke mine). Once you have access to the output shaft cover it is a quick job to replace the bearing. Just make sure that you do not miss the center bolt holding the cover on, the cover should come off easily with very little force and the bearing/shaft will all come out with it. When removing the nut from the shaft be carefull not to damage the rear gear, I used an aluminum vise. Use lock tight when putting everything back together, be careful not to over torque. Make sure to lubricate the splines. Good luck.

You should fit Output shaft cover part # T1260441
I got a couple of spare ones here leftover
Gasket & seal here somewhere too, can't see them at the moment to take #'s
 


Has anyone here ever replaced a output shaft bearing without dropping the entire engine out of the bike??. Just curious, I may be doing mine here shortly. I know one thing I'm not going to wait 6 wks to get repaired by the dealer.

Just did mine. It's still a major job but you basically have to unbolt and disconnect most things including the ht leads and pivot the frame on the front frame mounts. You also have to to loosen but not empty/remove the radiator.
