Owners manual shows pg. 15 as you posted with 91 min., but page 79 on mine shows the contradiction of both 91 and 87.
You said service manual shows the same. Where please, not doubting, just curious. My pdf service manual is same one my dealer uses cause we were looking up oil drain plugs once, and pg 591 shows the pic I posted last with 87 octane in the US. Some pg. earlier in the same pdf had 89 octane. Triumph really has bad proof readers!
My take is engine knock/pinging is your clue grade too low, and choosing lowest octane recommended by manufacturer without pinging is best for engine/performance.
( higher octane I read has slightly less co2 emitted, possibly a motive)
