Run premium fuel?

H

Honestly, it’s only on page 15 where it is describing a sticker on the tank that it shows the lower octane. On page 80 it states 95 RON minimum, and describes fuel type in detail. And the service manual says the same. Anyone still have their sticker so we can see what it actually says?

Owners manual shows pg. 15 as you posted with 91 min., but page 79 on mine shows the contradiction of both 91 and 87.
You said service manual shows the same. Where please, not doubting, just curious. My pdf service manual is same one my dealer uses cause we were looking up oil drain plugs once, and pg 591 shows the pic I posted last with 87 octane in the US. Some pg. earlier in the same pdf had 89 octane. Triumph really has bad proof readers!

My take is engine knock/pinging is your clue grade too low, and choosing lowest octane recommended by manufacturer without pinging is best for engine/performance.
( higher octane I read has slightly less co2 emitted, possibly a motive)

What version of Owner's Manual do you have? The soft copy version and the printed one I have (my bike was delivered new in May) state Publication part number 3855646-EN issue 1 at the bottom of Page 1. And neither of them have anything about fuel on Page 79. And both of them show the minimum 95 RON as I showed above. Full page pic attached.

As for the service manual discrepancies, I can't say. Except that a casual conversion error by an engineer may be the cause, confusing RON, MON and R+M/2. Because 87 MON taken as R+M/2 converts back to standard grade? I still would like to see an actual sticker from the bike (I took mine all off) because if it says premium, the Owner's manual is basically correct. And page 591 being in the context of engine management may not have been properly edited from a previous version, as the fueling section in the specifications (pg 71) is correct. *shrugs*

Just to clarify, at the top you said 95 ron is = to 87 octane? Is this correct?
Yes that is correct. Think of it like the metric system and imperial units. If you are going to torque a bolt it might say torque to 25ft lbs or to 34nm. The confusion comes from people talk octane and don't talk about the units.

I would also take the sticker descriptions in the manual with a grain of salt. When a new manual is created there is a lot of cut and paste from previous manuals to save time. The person making the manual very likely is thinking they are showing where the sticker is and not worried about what it says. The correct information will be located in the proper section of the manual.

My original sticker said 87 because I live in the US, I remember because that is one of the first things I checked on my bike, having to put in high octane all of the time can get to be a pain. Over here we also have a lot of single hose fuel pumps so I always wonder how much fuel is left in the hose that is standard grade before I get the good stuff.

We have different owners manual apparently. Mine copyright may 2019.
You said service manual correct on pg. 71. Shows 89 octane. You use 89 then? Why more credence to "fuel system" section than "fuel requirements" section, as the later is more specific and detailed?
Whenever a discrepancy exists, I think service manual Trumps (not political snowflakes)owners manual. To each his own.

For what it's worth, i've been running 87 here in the states for a couple thousand miles without issue. The manual does say 87 OR HIGHER, so I don't think running higher would be a problem. My dealer also told me to run 87. He said all premium is going to do is make the bike run hotter.

Quick search states the opposite, premium runs cooler to prevent pre-detonation.
Makes sense since my perception with 87 is more responsive, which I thought hotter. Don't really know. Glad 87 is fine.

No. I use 98 RON which is 94 in the US (or 95 RON/91 US if not available). Why on earth would I try and save a few dimes on a AUD$35K motorcycle just because of a few documentation errors, when both documents clearly state in a number of places that premium is the go?

I don't know either, but this is the kind of stuff that irks me with a $20k+ motorcycle. Conflicting information in owners and service manuals. Oil measurements that are inconsistent or debatable. These basic things shouldn't even be up for debate.
