Rear Diff Drain Bolt

Sort of makes you wonder why they don't just magnetize a better bolt. Good steel you can heat it, run some DC current through it and then quick quench to lock the molecules in orientation. Easier than drilling a bolt and making an insert I would think.

It may just be my way of thinking but I say it is designed that way to protect the pot metal casing at the rear diff, you know what we males are like wrench on it untill it will not turn anymore:D then crack goes the rear diff, no chance of this happening with this bolt.:D

I think you got it scot, "perfect engineering" I'd much rather replace a plug.

howl in the differential

i'm really glad to have found this thread. i've noticed a bit of an uncommon howl on the way home from what i suspect is the differential on my 08 classic. i'm going to change out the oil this weekend and i have 75/90 lucas synthetic which is rated as GL-5. this should work just fine i'm thinking. i'm going to get a 10mm x 1.5 thread bolt just in case. can this job be done while on the kickstand? i suspect so as long as i stand it upright to make sure all the old oil drains out. i'll also have to check the ounces it takes for refill. i use a baby bottle i got at a yard sale or a second hand store so i have something to gauge the ounces rather than guessing. thanks guys, this was a good and helpful thread.

drain with bike on side stand and fill till it starts to come out of fill hole while bike is upright

I made a few of these a while ago, had a bit of negative from a few so didn't bother to mention again - still got four spares if anyone's interested.

Made from 304 St/St, drilled shallower depth for magnet which is half the length but still twice as powerful as original. Able to torque up much more than original but not necessary, 15Nm seals ok.

Must have been a very quiet moment - 'cos I missed it. Rare-Earth magnet I assume.

A Dowty seal washer would make life easier. Esp with a centre location ring.
