I would have checked the wheel bearings or just replaced them due to the axle being so tight. I bought a set of five sockets at O'riellys auto store for about $40.00 dollars. Worked out fine. Plus the HEX sockets fit the tractor.

The axle being tight shouldnt damage the wheel bearings so no need to replace just check them

Absolutely +1 on the cheap tool. however, when I got ready to do my tires I didn't have the tool (forgot), wasn't going to take the time to order one or go to a bike shop. so made one on the fly.... tried the double nut, someone had tightened the **** outa my axle before I bought the bike, double nuts wouldn't hold, had to weld em....... now I have a tool...... home made, $0, works great. it now resides in my tool box.
Just adding another alternative to all of your excellent ideas

If I went to a shop for every "special one off tool I have needed over the years I would have spent a lot of money"but it's always (for me anyhow)good to improvise and generally come up with a better stronger item than a AH FING MOO God knows where built item (seen plenty of those break) what would you expect for $20, not so much with a teeny weeny motorbike axle nut but something on heavy equipment using an one and a half inch drive 1 metre long breaker bar or a big rattle gun , like on the track plate (browser) bolts on a D9 Dozer ,and we think the axle nut is tight on a rocket

Because when you try to undo the axle the second nut will undo before the axle does, plus I love to weld neatly because I can ,however if you use stainless nuts and bolts of the same grade eg 316 and tighten them up firmly they will more than likely gall and you don't have to weld them, BTW to prevent or lessen the chance of galling use 304 and 316 grade stainless nut/bolt combinations

i am like u if i bought a tool every time some one made some thing new i would be 100,000 in debt. i carry the one i made a little lighter than the one u buy. and i had to put a 3 foot cheater on mine to break it loose

Really. A over tighten axle will not affect the wheel bearing please explain.

Everything tightens up against the spacers and is supposed to not Place lateral pressure against the bearings.

If the axle is over torque it will cause the spacers to apply to much pressure upon the bearings resulting in failure of the bearings. That is why a lot of people only get a couple of thousand miles out of a set of bearings that should have lasted around 20,000 to 30,000 miles.

WHY would it ? the bearings are seperated with spacers and tightening the axle doesnt put tension on the bearings

The spacers seat against the inner ring of the bearings. All are made of solid steel. So, how can this place lateral pressure on the bearings and wear them out prematurely?

My bearings have been in for 130,000 miles. Are you telling me that I should have changed them 6 times? Why would a modern bearing break down that quickly?
