I don't care what lubricant you use if the bolt is used to pull things together or the nut spun on too quickly and heat is dramatically increased from friction within the threads and the same grade grade stainless is used in the nut and bolt galling can happen, lubrication can help but not always prevent this happening.

I hav3 to agree with @ about the double nutting have made several of these this way and never had one back off.

WE use antiseize on stainless and no galling

Have to agree. There's any number of these for sale from less than $10 up to just under $20. They're in bike shops and tool shops and online. Just how tight do you have to be? $10 guys! Seriously?????

Absolutely +1 on the cheap tool. however, when I got ready to do my tires I didn't have the tool (forgot), wasn't going to take the time to order one or go to a bike shop. so made one on the fly.... tried the double nut, someone had tightened the **** outa my axle before I bought the bike, double nuts wouldn't hold, had to weld em....... now I have a tool...... home made, $0, works great. it now resides in my tool box.
Just adding another alternative to all of your excellent ideas

I would have checked the wheel bearings or just replaced them due to the axle being so tight. I bought a set of five sockets at O'riellys auto store for about $40.00 dollars. Worked out fine. Plus the HEX sockets fit the tractor.

Yep, wheel bearings are next on my list. Having the right tools for the job is always the ideal way to wrench.
I wasn't pushing for everyone to have a toolbox full of home made tools, ha ha ha , just a quick fix alternative of thinking outside the box if you are caught in a situation like I was, where you need the tool now & dont have one

I love how these threads go from the starting subject & morph into way more info than originally intended
