R3T - Stripped bevel box drain plug.

Well I couldn't see messing with the pinion, as some that I've work with on pick ups have a crush sleeve & I wasn't about to drive 7 hrs to a dealer that probably wouldn't have parts anyways, so I removed all the bolts on the ring gear side & had a tough time lifting that cover. Finally got it off & very good thing that I went with that approach because where the drain plug hole is, the case is reinforced without enough clearance to the ring gear to pass the magnet that will probably always break off. I would probably advise everyone with a magnetic plug in the bevel box to take it out and throw it as far as possible never to be found again. Those plugs will invariably break at the end of the magnet because of the hole drilled to accept it. You cannot drill that magnet with a hand held drill! I tried using a "lefty" drill & it would only shine up a spot on the magnet.

I am assuming that the magnet is inside if so then you can look for it through the fill hole it may be stuck to the ring gear. Also if you rotate the pinion it might stop when it gets to the magnet then turn back to the fill hole.
As stated above, I tried drilling it to use an easy out with no success. As I first couldn't remove the ring gear case I though that I may be able to "shake it out" of the filler hole. No success on that because it is actually trapped in a compartment without enough room to pass by the ring gear. If I remember in the morning I will take some photos as this may help someone else. Got the ring gear case off & removed the magnet & cleaned all up & called it a night!
Thank you TURBO for all the suggestions.

On my very first bevel box oil change, I found out that if a magnet falls in there for whatever mystical reason the gears pulverize and with fluid flushing strait through all that magnet crush just washes right out, those clearances are so tight that magnet went to powder. But yeah get the suzuki or other solid drain bolt and save some fluid to flush through or a bunch of work if you snap one off. Or, dont snap it off

Sorry Sir but I will whole heartedly disagree with you! That magnet is inserted into a hole drilled into that bolt so it is surrounded by iron which will NOT be ground up into powder. You treat your machine as you like but I would NEVER go the route that you suggest! I may be a newby to Triumphs but Im not a newby to mechanics!
BTW, I snapped that drain plug with a 1/4 drive using one hand.....and I'm no Hercules....it took great effort when I removed it tho.

Good thread from years ago, this has been discussed before and depending on whether you use a drill when this bolt breaks or whatever your method the magnet, just the magnet can fall into bevel box, OFCOURSE you would not want this to happen, ITS not a method of fixing to knock anything into that bevel box but others have had magnet can fall into . The search function is so cool because when you first get a rocket everything is new and most of us know nothing and sure show it when we first join and break something we had no idea what it was or what id did or how it operates. This bolt is a great example, it happens but really not that often. Read and learn how to use search function before blurting out what you think you know when you didnt know a bolt was a magnet with a 2nm torque setting to begin with, trust me ive done it here often myself .

So why do you state a "2nm" torque setting when the manual states 15nm? Maybe you need to use a search function also & I assume that you are a long time member. As such you shouldn't be giving out bad advice.

I use a small o'ring on mine and my way of thinking is it just has to be tight enough not to fall out.
If i think about it next time i change the lube i will check my torque against a torque wrench.
It's not like it is a head bolt

Yes, that's what I did to mine. I'm thinking about using a safety wire on it if I can find a way to anchor the wire that won't be too noticeable. I've done that to a few of my Harleys, just because because I'm paranoid & do long rides. All HD plugs are on the bottom tho.
