had to replace the rear tire at 6000 because there was a weird cut down the center of the tire plenty of tread left and front tire at 6600 because it was cuping bad fin metzlers !!
Just got a wisker under 15,000km out of original Metzler. It suddenly went from some tread to no tread in a single afternoon. Quick call around and no-one has Avon in stock - coming at the end of the week. This is what I wantewd. The front had already been changed to an Avon as a result of a puncture so I wanted an Avon rear. Then I get told that the only Avons in the country were sitting in a container somewhere and that everything else had been recalled. That was a shipment of 5, yes 5, Avon Cobras for the whole of Australia stuck on some dock soewhere. With little choice I went with the only available Metz in Canberra - and at a good price, which included fitting, and they were able to do it straight away. Poor bastard took 2 hours just getting the old one off.
Must say that I'm happy with the Metz. As the tire it came with I couyld see no reason to complain about it. I don't ride too hard and find that I'm 'giving it to her' a little less when I take off these days. I'm aware of what she can do and generally happy just knowing it's there - but not always. Handling is fine, even in the wet, and if I can get 15,000km out of my rear tires and replace them quickly and at reasonable cost then I'm happy.
I haven't ridden the bike with a Metz on the front but find the Cobra front and Metz rear handle just fine and the bike feels very stable and sure footed in the rain.
I only got 8 or 9 k miles on metzelers, but my first Avon rear tire has 10k now and its got plenty of life left in it. Except for rain riding, I like the Avon much better. The Metz was great in the rain, I have to be very careful with the Avon.

I switched to Avon Gripsters on the KLR, get three times the mileage, and they are a much better street tire. Plus, they are tubed tubeless and much stiffer, so even when completely out of air they will stay on the rim. I have ridden on them when the air pressure was near zero. Makes me feel much better about riding a tube tired bike.
my rear avon has 10 000kms and need to be changed badly some of the large grooves have completely disappeared the tread mark is also totally gone , when installed it was UNDERINFLATED and I never noticed till 4000kms later in france when tod by triumph service manager and the wear was ugly the result was the bike wobbled on long fast sweepers and backslid a bit on old ashphalt. the uneven wear could be seen but Idid not know till I was told..
make sure you get 2.8 on the euro inflation scale for proper inflation on the rear avon cobra . I will post picture of the tire when the bike lands in Calgary and also when I buy a new camera I dropped the old one on the sidewalk in frankfurt really stupid!
