New ECU and no start?

Can you tell us what the deal charged to get your ECM functional? Thanks.
I believe it was only $65. He also loaded the TOR tune as per my request. I wanted to insure the ECU would take a tune before I left the dealership.

a lot of the new or rebuilt ecu (car & truck) needs to have the vin# installed and mileage programmed in.
so if your tool will write the vin then it most likely will work:)

edit
i think they copy the vin# then paste in new ecu.

Triumph lock their ECUs with passwords so doubtful anyone else can unlock them.
When unlocking my new ECU with the Triumph software I didn't have to input VIN or anything

Herman,
Appreciate the response.
My Dealer Tool is keyed in on my VIN# and I don't see an opportunity to load mileage, so me reckons my Dealer Tool won't awaken a new ECU.
Oh well, hopefully it will never happen to me & if so, shall be a bridge I'll just have to cross.

Dealertool guy emailed back to say that they can't unlock a new ECU :(

@R-III-R Turbo
Gratitude for doing that, Amigo!!!

Can you unlock the Bonneville 1200 series ECU ?

That is interesting. 2 of my friends have 2016 T120 and another friend has a 2016 Thruxton R. Triumph told us the ECU are locked and can not be unlocked or reprogrammed.
We were at Bonneville Salt Flats last year racing the the Thruxton R and could not get past 136 MPH. I called Triumph and they would not help us set a record.

With your unlocking code can the ecu be reprogramed like we do to our Rockets with TuneECU ?

Thanks, Bill

Hi Bill

· 2016 Thruxton T120 (VIN# 743684 onwards)

I don't know if it can unlock a Bonneville/Thruxton for remapping as i haven't done one. But probably.

In my experience these days the ECUs are likely blank i.e. no map when shipped out of Triumph, and locked.
You can hook up to the bike and run tests like fan and ISCV reset etc but can't run the bike or load a map.
If you try to load a map you get that fault code and a flashing EMS light. And use up 1 of your 3 goes.

So my understanding is, you hook your bike up to your computer with the Triumph diagnostics kit, and you can unlock the new ECU to be mapped for the first time.

Triumph has a few factory maps ready for loading, e.g. UK market map, EU market map, TORS, etc.
It won't recognise a TuneECU or Tuneboy map though.
It won't allow you to edit a map e.g. fuel tables etc. So it's a map loader but not editor.
Wonder could I get my mitts on the map editing software Triumph use :sneaky:

If it'll allow you to unlock a new ECU to be remapped, then maybe that's the same thing as unlocking a mapped ECU from a running bike to be remapped (by TuneECU or whatever map editor program).
I'd wager it does.

Anyway - I'd have to send you the kit as you need a bike to plug it into i.e. it plugs into the OBD port on the wiring harness, not directly to the ECU (so you couldn't ship me the ECU as I don't have a Bonneville or Thruxton lying around to sub it into).

This is some intriguing stuff. I have an old re-mapping tool for a Harley, laying around here somewhere. What blew my mind, is that the first time you connect it to an ECU, it locks itself to that ECU, and can not be used on any other ECU. I even investigated in how to erase an eprom chip, etc. etc. WAAAY over my head.

Bill,
FYI - Before you buy one . . .
Remember the Dealer Tool is locked only into the VIN# of the bike you bought it for.
I didn't know this until after purchase and installation.
SUX, but still better than not having the ABS ECU bleed feature.

Wow R3RT, Thanks for the detailed reply. It is a bit over my head too. I modify and load maps with TuneECU on these older ECU on our Rockets but I'd be afraid to attempt it on these newer Bonneville bikes. I'll have to wait until the Tune ECU guys crack the code and make it simple for me to do it. Maybe someone will make a piggy back fueler for them soon.
