Mounting an Exedra Max rear tire on the new 3R = Better Handling

That was easy… I overcame my laziness and just unmounted my rear wheel to measure the hub diameter. It’s 60 point something millimeters just under 61 mm see the picture below. I couldn’t fit my digital caliper inside the rim so I just had this analog tool. Hope this helps others.
I appreciate you doing this, thank you.

Is that for your 2013 Rocket 3??

Love the rubber on the cruisetec 84V 1108lbs, tires installed
I just bought a rear Cruistec for $270 delivered from Dennis Kirk. Very sad to say that Rocky Mountain ATV does not carry them and when I chatted with them the response was, basically, we have what we carry. Well, allrighty then...

The Cruistec rear is $30 more than the Exedra Max from Rocky Mountain. Hoping I'll like it and then buy a matching front when it's time. Only regret will be that it will drop the A$$ end back down a bit, lengthening the rake. But my short legs will reach better, so there's that...

Looks like I'll see you @Kevin frazier and @Nashvegas in a few days at the Devil's Triangle. My rear tire will definitely be needing fresh rubber after riding with you hooligans, as I'm getting close to where it goes from "looks like time for a new tire soon," to nothing left overnight.

Heck, this past weekend when I went over to Kevin’s to change my tires, he pointed out that my Cobra rear had wire showing and then he noticed my brake pads. Those should be here Friday. 😇 He was nice enough not to rag me on it but definitely a lesson learned to keep up with the status/wear of your stuff. Oh, and my dark brake fluid. 😇😇
Edit- My tire was $328 with tax from Revzilla. Grrr… But I did find a great place out of Italy for Brembo brake pads. I ordered them Monday and they were on an airplane Tuesday and the price was stellar. $16 for shipping. CarpiMoto

Listen to "the man." :)

thanks for the good info. anybody pairing this rear with a taller front to increase height and lean angle? The lean angle is giving me a little buyers remorse

*Edit- I was getting some whistling so I raised the fender up another 1/2" and it went away. So, raise the fender 1"
I'm about to do this and am wondering if 3/4" spacers would work instead of 1", I don't know if you have tried this and if there still would be a whistling.

I'm not sure. I'd get some 1" spacers- or, if you're in a hurry just cut some rubber hose and replace later with actual spacers.

This is a DIY install of the Exedra Max on the new 3R. It requires minor modifications to the forward most rear fender and, if doing it yourself, a tire stand and Mojo Lever - I'd say about a two beer rating for time/difficulty.

The result, in my opinion, is a less expensive tire that provides better performance, handling, and wear.

The Exedra Max has proven to be a very good tire on my ’11 Roadster. The Exedra goes for $200, as opposed to $312 (WTF?) for the Cobra Chrome at Rocky Mountain ATV. With an average of three tire changes/year this is a significant difference.

What you can expect: The Exedra is 1” taller, so you have to raise the fender on the front of the swing arm up an extra 1/2.”
* A couple of 1/2" spacers and a short piece of metal (thanks @Tal for the tip) was all that was needed to make the switch. So, the bike sits taller, but for me, with only a 30” inseam, it seems like it’s a couple of inches taller. This will provide you with more clearance (fewer peg drags) and, because the rake is changed, quicker handling that you’ll especially notice on the twisties.

About the mounting....
Just 5 bolts and the wheel is off!

I use Motion Pro irons to break the beads- easy.

I've been using the Mojo Level on the Roadster and it works great on the 3R too. I balance using Marc Parnes' setup, but the 3R has a large hub opening and I need to see about getting some kind of adapter. This time I used Dyna Beads, but I really prefer the traditional method.

Speaking of wheel weights- there were a boat load of them on there from the factory to balance out the Cobra Chrome. I've never had to use that many weights.

The Cobras wore more on one side and this is what I had left at 3,150 miles....

The front also needs replacing and is cupping (my usual experience with Avons). It'll get changed before meeting up in Maggie Valley next weekend. I usually get about 4,000 from a tire on the Roadster, so I'm not sure if it's just the Chromes, or if the new bike is even more hungry for tires - I guess I'll know in the next 3-4K.
Hi, since the angle will change due to a taller rear tyre, do you think it will decrease the life of the rear tyre since there is more weight in the front now ?
