Maximum speed per gear before hitting rev limiter?

I had a similar experience with third gear (100 mph) yesterday minus the GF. Once again traffic spoiled the fun...got me to wondering if the overall speed limiter would kick in before the rev limiter. Besides the speedo only goes to 120 anyway...

BTW scanned the Vmax / Rocket 3 article in CW at Walmart on Monday while waiting for a prescription to be filled. It was kinda short and lacking details, but revealed what everyone with a Rocket already knows.....the Rocket is the King of roll-on acceleration! :flame:

Hit 110 in 3rd gear last Friday night, but had to back off because the GF started getting antsy. Limiter hadn't kick it and was pulling like a freight train.

Sounds like your organic rev limiter is working exactly as designed.

Well, traffic finally cooperated this morning and hit rev limiter at 83 in second gear. Stock R3T and stock speedo. No big reaction when hit just lost most its power till I upshifted. Anyone with the guts for trying third keep me posted.

Had it up to 110 again this weekend without the GF but realized I was in a 35MPH zone and figured I'd better shut it down (industrial area on a Sunday). It did wax my buddies '04 Fat Boy that's been bored to 95 inches with ported heads and some mild cams though.

Calculations show that it'll do 123 in 3rd at 6500 RPM.

Not sure about the R3T but I suppose it would be the same as the standard.

primary reduction ratio of 1.034 (91/88)
final reduction ratio of 2.846 (37/13)
5th gear ratio .964 (27/28)

I figured 181.5 for the Rocket in 5th gear at 6800 Rpms.

This thread made me pay attention going to work yesterday. 3000rpm is right at 80mph on my standard.
It needs a 6th gear BAD!

I 'll second the motion but somebody surely somewhere must be working on adapting a six gear...............
