if it was mine i would remove top piece take a drill the correct size grease it to keep the rust from dropping down clean the hole and make a new top.
i don't know if anyone has ever pulled that breather but i would assume that it is a pressed fit and might be able to knock it out by putting the correct size drill and screw driver if it has a lip, hth
I would do all as you say BUT have the final drive upside down in my vice so no swarf or crap can enter the drive unit

If you have gotten the cap itself off and now want to get the stub out of the housing, you could slide a piece of steel bar that is the correct diameter inside the tube, then grip it with some vice grips, twist and pull it should come out.

I hav'nt given it any force yet. Too worried about damage and being unable to remove any broken part. I just know it's tight. I Don't want to have a fit that isn't watertight and then bugger the drive housing up.

I guess I will just have to put up with it and keep cleaning and polishing it. The corrosion isn't too bad at the moment and will polish up quite well.

plan B
buy the part and see how it is made. if it is a pressed fit u might be able to weld a ring on top of the cap then use a slide hammer to pull it. if just the cap comes off then clean and put the new cap on.

I thought it was all in one, but maybe you are correct. The cap may come off although it doesn't look like it. Will look closer, Thanks.

i am going on mine 2007 so it might be different.
mine has a cap.
