Exhaust Header Temp.

My 2 bobs worth, you buy a 2.3 litre powered motorcycle with the exhaust exiting out the side of the motorcycle as opposed to a east west mounted engine that has the exhaust exiting toward the front of the engine and then pass under the motorcycle and out behind the riders legs, ,then you modify the stock exhaust manifold ,and surprise surprise your legs get radiated heat from the exhaust and you wonder why , maybe this is why Triumph engineers designed the plumbers pipe exhaust system and heat shields to minimise the heat problem ,as for Paul not having detailed heat data on his exhaust I bet if you contacted any other after market exhaust manufacturers they would not have them readily available either ,

JUST SO EVERYONE IS CRYSTAL CLEAR ON THIS - I EXPECTED A TEMP RISE FROM THE HEADERS. But when the vendor denies that there is a heat issue, then that is when I take it to the Forum to see if ANYONE ELSE HAS THE ISSUE. O.K.?

So far I have got some solid suggestions on the PC V & Autotune which I have taken, and will post my findings. But what I find puzzling is that I know what this is, and I know what to expect, and I have multiple people telling me "it's not that bad", "You should expect it when you go to a aftermarket exhaust". Well, It isn't Awesome, and I did expect it. What I didn't expect was to ask the vendor a solid question (regardless of what the forum thinks), that would take literally 1 hour to complete (which I offered to pay for the time), and he blows me off. I asked to take the temp at 5 minute idle, and after a 20 minute ride between 60-70 mph (again at idle) at the top of the header by the block, in the middle of the down tube, and at the collector, and tell me what the temps are as a benchmark for me to see what I need to do.

Again, I put it out there - Does anyone with a aftermarket exhaust (it doesn't have to be Viking, but if it is, I would like to know) have a Harbor Freight Laser Temp Gauge? Can anyone out there take a minute and post (or PM) some temps? I would like a benchmark to work from.

This ship has sailed. I am not disparaging Viking Muffler, or Paul. I am really happy with the performance! REALLY HAPPY. But not happy with the heat issue, and would like to figure what an average might be.

I am waiting on my exhaust getting ceramic coated or I would help out, warp brought up a good point about leg position on the std verses the roadster, hang on I am sure someone will post the temp readings that you are after.

I have the boards not the pegs, I'm 6'4, so I can stretch and move around. Thanks for any help.

@Super D. I'm going to let this stand so I can respond.

You, or anyone for that matter, are free to ask anything you want. What you want does NOT make it reasonable. And if the vendor doesn't do it, for whatever reason, this is NOT the place for you (or anyone) to complain -- UNLESS -- there is a vendor who promised X, and then does not deliver X.

And in this case, your request is unreasonable -- BECAUSE -- the two of you have different bikes, different engines because of the control software if nothing else.

This is analogous to the joke of the little boy jumping up and down on the street corner, and the man asks "Why ?" The little boy responds, "To keep the elephants away." The man exclaims, "But there are no elephants around here." To which the little boy responds triumphantly, "See, it works !"

Whatever numbers came back, they would not relate to your bike, and likely just leave you more frustrated even as you had been given data you requested.

The vendor has NOT denied there is a heat issue -- only you can determine that.

The vendor HAS denied -- correctly -- that his exhaust makes any contribution to the heat being produced by the engine.

Ultimately, you will have to find your own path to happiness.

Blaming the header contractor for your trouble is not on that path.

My Jardines can be hot and I can't wear frog toggs, for they will melt, BUT, I can wear jeans, and I can wear my Triumph riding suit and no harm comes to either, and none to me. And when up to speed all that heat blows away. Of course if it is a hot steamy day, the exhaust is going to seem that much hotter...it ain't really, but there's nothing else that feels cool, so it's just fat on a summer fire. In cool weather I wouldn't even be aware of the exhaust!

Thank you sir. With the wrap on there, it is pretty manageable. As I said before, I hate to cover up all of that beautiful work. But it is, what it is. If you get an opportunity, I would be interested in seeing what temp you are at after a 5 minute idle at the top of the header.

I plan a ride tommorow and somwhere I have a digital pyrometer...perhaps I can locate it and train it on the headers.

Chappettes - I feel a trip to somewhere "horsey" coming on. Big French sports chain called "Decathlon" will be my first call. They have some which are leather inside leg and free breathing outside leg. Must wear my "Buell Adventure Gear".

sounds the trick I should of mentioned I bought them from a "Horsey" gear section at a local stock and feed supply centre

So after reading all the comments I would have to say that no one wants to take a temp reading for you. Nice. I still have stock headers so I can take a temp reading right at the flange under the heat shield if you'd like? That would give you an idea of the stock temperature is anyway.
