3,000 drivers caught using mobiles in first week

Observation by law enforcement, yeah, throw the book at 'em. Using cameras for enforcement? Big Brother would be so proud. Pretty soon you won't be able to stop and take a piss behind a tree without a government camera watching you.

Agree, but cell phone use while driving has been shown to be as, or more dangerous than alcohol impairment.
These are the ONLY cameras I would endorse!

So how many demerit points until you loose your licence ?
Here in NZ it's 100, we get them dumped on us in lots of 20, 30, 35, 50 etc.

It used to be that if you accumulated 120 points, you lost your licence for 3 months (I think) and all points were wiped out.
Now, with that 120 (etc) points you loose your licence for 3 months, but retain the 20 still on record adding to your "next time"
12 points until suspension in ACT and NSW and states are supposed to share demerit points balances on a national scheme but it doesn't happen in practice.

Lose licence at 13 points (14 for professional drivers) with double points during long weekends, school holidays, Xmas, Easter, and so on. Plus fines, of course.

Very easy to lose your licence in one hit... school zone and phone during double demerits, and you're walking. Even a passenger's seat belt. Mum cannot turn around to referee the kids in the back!

Licence suspensions/cancellations 3 months and up... all points stay on record for three years from dates acquired - whether you're suspended or not.
But weirdly once suspended ALL points are removed and you start with a 0 balance again with your full 12/13 points restored even if the 3 year time period for each offense was not met. Here in the ACT you can also get a 'Get your licence back card' by taking a one point credit but if you lose it for any reason within a year, you will get a doubled suspension period. A mate took that option and got done again for speeding a few weeks later:D, paid the fine but before they could action the penalty points and license suspension he was transferred interstate to Western Australia and his still valid ACT license (pending suspension) was cancelled when he was issued a WA full 12 point licence.

Truck drivers cannot do this because they have a Federal licensing scheme across all states.

Have you checked lately mate? It is only there to make sure you squat and do not stand thereby reinforcing strong gender specific antisocial tendencies.
It started in the home and has now naturally expanded it's range of control!;):p:D

I have no problem with going after these cell phone morons. I split traffic often and normally see a minimum 20% of the drivers on any given time or roadway on their cell phones and completely oblivious of any one or any thing . They're hazards on the road. F*** em!! You want to see real life Zombies? Go to your local mall and watch them walk around with their heads down running into walls and people. Did I say F*** em? Good!

I hate the cell phone and distracted driving but I don’t like camera enforcement either. We would all have fines out the azz if cameras were watching us drive these Rockets.

The police are exempt from the law? So they are immune from distraction? BS:evil: I think we’ve had this discussion before and my opinions are not popular.;)

One state of Australia, N.S.W., has rolled out mobile phone detection cameras, apparently the first in the world to do so.

In the first week, over 3,000 drivers were snapped using phones illegally.

The cameras can be moved between locations, and no warning signs are posted.

Initially, drivers will receive only a warning letter. After a 3-month trial period, a fine of $300-plus will apply, AND FIVE (yes, 5!) demerit points.

About time.

Must look up the penalty for a second offence......

They have the mobile phone camera thingys in France too.... just started implementing them in trial areas. i have absolutely no problem with these type of cameras! They’re designed so they can get heavy goods vehicle drivers as well as car drivers. In the Uk they now have a cop truck which cruises up and down the M25. It’s basically the prime mover of a truck, full of electronics and cameras to catch drivers speeding, on the phone and in particular the pr**s who think it’s ok to watch films or tv as they drive along at 70mph...

Move to Cali. You can take a dump anywhere and the'll send you a phone and a check.
