T Evans- I use Mobil 87 octane at this time....I may try the additive Hellfire uses until my next valve check. I wonder if the additive does anything for the octane rating?

You can find all the details here Our Fuels: Fuel Additives: Techron Concentrate Plus .
On that page under the "Benefits" tab, there is a photo of that chocolate cake looking valve deposit and how bad it can get. I've actually seen BMW valves that were even worse, you could mash the gas pedal down and have to wait a couple seconds before the car would move.

Just thought I would mention. I checked my valves at 10k miles, all good. At 20k checked them again, still in spec. I didn't baby it either.
Talked to a Triumph tech at Foothills here in Denver about it and he said he rarely sees any valves out of spec on the Rocket. Was a bit surprised, as its easy $ for them. Nice guy!

your statement is one reason I get piece of mind doing my own work if possible. I am in control of of doing the job properly or not...not hurry up cause it's Friday' etc. and skip the valve check or use the old gasket and spark plugs, etc. And charge the customer the full price and 6 mos down the road you wonder why you have a burned valve. Not saying this happens.. but
Also, there is always that risk of an error or mistake on my part that can get very costly...with piece of mind, I sleep better!

Glad to see you tackled as I will be doing this in the near future myself. I rather do my own service for the reasons you stated.. Now I dont feel so stressed about it. Looks easy. Did you use the round feller gauges or the flat ones?

Thanks mutt

I had first hand experience with a dealer service dept that simply just didn't replace maintenance parts they didn't happen to have in stock that day.
Any shop I've ever worked in would have been so embarrassed to find out that a valve cover was leaking oil because the gasket wasn't replaced during a valve service and the customer was never given the choice to wait for it to come in or come back later, that the service adviser, tech and parts counter person would all be reprimanded and the customer never see a bill. Hell, if a service like that was booked in advance and we didn't have the gasket at the time, after contacting the customer to apologize and make arrangements, the gasket would be on the house along with the air freight. But around here in the north east, it's just how things are done. Sneaky, chincy, customer be ware, steal til you get caught and then blame it on someone else ... bull****.

Real customer service is long dead around here, I hope it's just here.

Kmutt...I used flat type feeler gauge but if you have the kind thats flat but bent up at an angle it would work better...Mike
