Im confussed - nothing new there - about the services and which one I need, and of course the dealers arent helping at all.

My bike - a 2006 model - has just turned 10,000 miles - so I reckoned it needs a 10K service. The dealer says that the 10K servide doesnt change any of the filters or fluids - - just a basic check and a check of the shims. They go on to say that a 20K service changes all the filters/fluids but does not check the shims.

What does my bike need?

He's right LMG you need to do the 20k brake fluid and coolant change, and yes you could check valve clearances, but at 10k why bother....... I am wrenching for the local Truimph agent did a 20k on a 675 street triple today you need hands a lot smaller than mine old to get into check valves on them.......... give me a rocket any day, but man are those wee things sweet to ride, fun fun fun...

Ask him for the 20,000 mile service with shim check thrown in.

Just so you have something to compare, the 20,000 mile service I had done in March cost me £432.17, including vat, 6 new spark plugs and new oil tank o rings. It was 5 hours labour in all.

The service book says 10,000 miles or a year, whichever comes first.

Seeing as Leighs bike is a 2006, it should now have the bigger service, even though it hasn't done the larger mileage.

Oh crap i'm so screwed up!! I'm riding a 2005 bike with 25,000 miles on it and I've only had the 10k service done!

I've been suspiciously eyeing the 20k service and it seems like a whole lot of "inspecting" and not a whole lot of "maintaining". I know there's a lot of fluid changes but not much else.

Now I understand I'm supposed to be getting the 40k service done instead because the bike is four years old???

If your bike sits in the garage year after year and isn't ridden much it seems a bit odd to have its annual maintenance done. I know these are not my circumstances but for illustration purposes it seems pretty silly to me. Is this really necessary??

DO IT YOURSELF,
download the book, and the check list, put on a Triumph hat

follow the checklist and the book, the valve check is super simple to do based on the how to posted,

shims and such are a different story, but the how to is very comprehensive.

I'm with you on the 20K service. The critical elements seem to be to change fluids based on both mileage or time and anyone with a wrench and rudimentary mechanical knowledge can do this. Changing the filters, which includes the fuel tank filter, and the valve check to me are more connected to mileage. The fuel filter and the valve check are are obviously a bit more complicated. All the other "check and inspect" steps look to be no brainers and not worth the $90 an hour the shop gets to do them.
