Heck, even if there was no safety factor for helmets, I would wear them. I've run into to mighty big bugs and rocks thrown up from ahead, and the image of the pain is etched in my memory.
Anyone who rides a motorcycle without a helmet will have his head examined... I've had one bad crash in 2004 and another minor one ,both were due to the tires deflating. I hit a sharp piece of metal that blew the back tire at 70 mph causing me to lose control and go down. When i looked at my helmet i thank God i was wearing it.

When the helmet law was repealed here in Michigan I hopped on my bike and went for a ride. It had been so long since I ridden without a helmet I had forgotten what it was like. The wind, the noise, the bugs, the dirt and stones.... I came back and told my wife I'll stick with the helmet. And yes, getting caught in the rain without a helmet and shield is another story.
I'm glad the law was repealed as it should have been in my opinion. Some of the guys I ride with ride without their helmets at least part of the time. I didn't hit my head, to my knowledge, when I was hit from behind and had my bike totaled last September. I had my helmet on and I will continue to do so in the future. It just make sense.
I would have like to seen a northern state in the study as well that has a shorter rider season. I've often wondered if there was a factor in that...not so much of assumed lack of skill from the rider because the season isn't as long but the driving public around the biker not as used to bikes being in traffic.
Most motorcycle accidents happen within 10 miles of the owners house . Food for thought. The last time I rode in California they had no helmet law. That was a long time ago.
I'd imagine for the same reasons most states repeal them- pressure from riders groups, and freedom to choose. Lots here support free choice concealed carry of firearms. Is free choice to wear or not to wear helmets so very different?
