Transmission problem

I'm no mechanic an know very little about what makes these beasts perform the way they do. My r3 was also jumping out of first gear and after a while second and third gear what I don't understand is why with a broken detent spring didnt it jump out of all the gears straight away instead of over a couple of weeks .

Good question Peter. Mine started jumping out of second and then 4th. 3rd and 5th were OK for a while but I was being very careful by then.

if i remember right i think u have a spring that controls 2 and 4 gear and another that controls 3 and 5 gear if im not right some one will correct me soon but that is what happen to mine and as stated erlier the engine does not have to come out they can go thru the front of the engine

Cann why was it poping out of 2 nd that is what mine does sometimes I dont want to take over thread but if your was doing it and you fixed it I'd like to know

My roadster popped out of second twice, took it to the dealer ( not the dealer I bought it through) they told me to do an oil change and put a full synthetic oil in as the oil that the dealer used after the first service was only a partial synthetic oil. I put the motol full synthetic in and no problems since

Good to know. I bought my bike used from motorcycle shop not a dealer. The oil on dip stick looks new. I can see them putting cheap oil in to save money.

Can these detent springs be replaced with better than stock spring? Or is stock springs good enough and fail with age. Maybe I will search for the other thread that was mentioned

Thanks for the responses.

I have never broke a detent spring on my 06 and it has over 60,000 abusive miles on it. sure broke/exploded a lot of other stuff though:eek:

If the bike isn't moving, ALWAYS let the clutch out in neutral before engaging 1st, especially just after starting. It should clunk into gear. If there's no clunk it will probably pop out of first. If it hasn't clunked, just work the clutch out a little and press it into 1st again. It should clunk. If you're moving when you engage 1st, it should be OK.

If it's popping out of 2nd or other gears it could be the detent spring. Do not let this go unchecked for long as it could be catastrophic. Relatively simple(ish) fix which can be done without removing the engine, so don't let your dealer/repairer tell you that they have to do so.

Like Canberra said, if it jumph's out of First its just not in all the Way , make sure you get a clunk- even the new Rockets , before coming to a Dead Stop shift down into First ! I Don't Know the answer to the Second Gear Pop out? Upgraded in 2008 .

Oh! If you change to synthetic......change your oil filter also.

I changed to full synthetic with a new oil filter. It has not popped out of gear again. I think it is because I am more conscious of making sure it is fully in gear. I have had my bike for about a week now. I am becoming more familiar. Thanks for all the posts.

That is good to hear. Keep a eye on the clutch free play if it is not right you will not get full gear engaugement. if it starts popping out of second gear it will most likley be in need of the new style gear cluster and a few belllevill washers. With any luck it will not be that. Now matter what oil you use even synthetic which is good stuff if it starts to shift rough that is a sign of it needing a oil change. What brand and weight of oil did you use if I may ask. ALso pleas verify if it is a 06 I beleieve you stated it was. and if so is it a classic or standard? Good to hear she is acting better my friend.
