Transmission issue

Potential new owner here. Am I to assume that gearbox problems are an issue for a lot of R3s?

I don't think a lot of R3s have gearbox problems as we only hear of the ones that do have problems, from my experience it was faulty assembly that caused the gearbox to become increasingly noisy and the gear changes "clunky" when we pulled it down for repairs the a spacer washer was installed incorrectly and some of the gears had the edges worn off, the detent spring was bent and the cam chain tensioner almost worn down to the metal, also my water pump seal leaked at 15000Klms a total of 46000 Klms of gentle riding and meticulous servicing ,but I must say a lovely ride while it lasted ,others have more than doubled that mileage or more trouble free

The bike would be a replacement for my Suzuki B-King which is 100% reliable. I'll have to think hard.

Non of the Japanese bikes come close to the presence of the Rockets or Harleys in fact, you have to choose if you want bragging rights or you want total reliability and out of the box superior performance, handling and braking, I have gone to a Kawasaki 1400 GTR as it is what I want in a bike now, the Rocket Touring is still in the Family so I have the best of both worlds.

I agree with you as far as to 'Harleys...'

Its a bit hit and miss maybe - I have 232hp and punish the transmission a bit when riding - but i am also ready for it if it does let go as i have a complete spare trans with back cut dog gears ready to go.
I know I should install the spare set first but thats too much work than I want to do right now.

232 bhp. Is that a back wheel figure?

Ok, update, first big ride since the tranny fix (darn I got to post those pics). Everything seems back to "normal" as far as a triumph transmission goes. I actually think it got better as the day wore on (either that or I just got used to it). I am still thinking a better fluid might even help out more, suggestions?
