Hey..

Do you guys know what kind of down force you are putting on the front tire at those speeds ...just with a flyscreen. I can not fathom what the weight is with a full windscreen.

Look at the max weight specs. on your front tire..Then know the Rockets weight, plus your weight. Should be well in the safe range.

A flyscreen at 130 mpg has to be applying 100's of lbs. of down force.

A full windscreen has to put you well into the overload weight of the front tire.

What you are feeling at those speeds is the belts in the tire giving to the over weight condition.....The tire is buckling under all that down force.

Think about it!! The next time you run the Rocket with a flyscreen or a full windscreen at those speeds....Stop asap on clean pavement and look at the chicken strips on the front tire. I thing you will be shocked

Just my 2 cents worth

I am no expert Joey But I believe I rememeber a post on this or the .com site showing the air flow over the top of a fairing/windshield creating a lifting force taking weight off the front. but I could be ass baclwards. eithway I do not run aboove 150/155 anymore with a full screen on and most of my top end runs had not screen what so ever because to run naked you cannot even have the flyscreen as it counts as streamlining.
They fly screen I have had up to 179 and it seems to be great cutting thru the air. I cannot confirm because My chin is on the tank when I am up there.

top speed

Was doing a job in Pt Pirie Sth Aus some time ago , good open roads, you can see for miles, wound the speedo past 220 believe doing about 240 km like being a parachute, holding on for enjoyment. bike handled so well over prolonged periods of speed.
cheers scratchyDave

Yes once you get the odometer close to the zero mark the second time around it is a whole new game. But you have to be carefull one screw up moving your arms and its hard to recover. I am picky about speed testing full gear and the day must be windless. I have two roads I do this on and only when the fields are down and you can see side to side besides in from of you. I have my buddies watching also and the are on the phone in my ear to warn me if something shows up. If so then I shut her down!!!!

Have one spot down here in Vic that I can see over two rises, by pure chance one day stopped to do up jacket and took up at full noise. when over first rise noticed that front wheel lifted of ground. Next time over worked the moment a bit more, then used to show up Harley mates how to do. encountered a strong crosswind one day and just managed to get front wheel tracking on landing. scared the bejuses out of me, havent done since. Respect cheers scratchyDave

Thanks Warp

You just help make my point. " But you have to be carefull one screw up moving your arms and its hard to recover"

The flyscreen is used to make an air foil over the riders helment and body when he is in the tucked position, reducing the wind drag on the rider. The design of the flyscreen and the mounting position can not create lift due to the air flow speed above the screen and under the screen.

Try this... take a small chunk if thin plywood apx. the same size as the flyscreen, at 80 mph hold it out to the side at the same angle as the flyscreen. then try it at 110 mph. to see what happens.....Just joking do not try this.

My point was to let you guys with windscreens is to be very carefull at speed. The wobble or squirmey feeling you are getting is comming from overloading the weight on the front tire.

Warp... next time you plan to make a run..find some styrofoam, cut into blocks apx. 2 in X 4 in. and 1/2'' thick. Get into your tucked position and where your chin touches the tank put the blocks there and add blocks if needed to get your head into the best position. then use duct tape to mount them to your tank.
It will make a huge difference on your vision at those speeds. Try it I think you will like it..

I understand the concept of lift, it requires air moving both over and under a laminar surface. I could see a small steeply angled screen possibly creating lift, but the big, barely angled screen on my touring could never create lift, no air moving under it, I think Joey makes a valid point. Glad I'm running Avons now, at least the front is speed rated (forget the letter at the moment), I will definitely remove my screen, or put on the little one, if I ever try another high speed run. I've run up to 145 mph, or better on my Sprint, with it's little screen, never had any handling issues.

I agree with you to a point..about air flow. The air flow under the bottom side of an air foil has to be smooth and undisturbed while the air on the top side of the parabolic wing has to travel farther than the air under the wing to create lift.

The wings and air foils on a Indy car or F1 car will let the car run completely up side down at 120 mph just from the down force.
The wing on a World of Outlaw car generated thousands of lbs of down force making them stick to the track.

The first Indy car race I went to I was surprised at the sound of the tires comming at you. I could hear the tires long before I could hear the engine. It sounded like something with 4 snow tires roaring

OMG........I have way to much time on my hands or just bored.....which ever:p
