Shaft Splines

Thanks Turbo, that makes sense to torque the shaft nuts, in sequence, before torquing the axle. It looks like rust but I think it is just the factory dry lube, but i will clean it up before applying the moly 60.

Yeh it's dried up lube by the look of it. You're fortunate it's worn so well considering your mileage. Mine was chewed up pretty bad at 96,000klms. New diff here in Australia was $2,000. Was a bit of a sh!tfight to get it replaced under warranty .. they reckoned the mileage was too high.

They are worn but hey you might as well get your moneys worth out of it. I would start keeping a eye out for another rear end and drive shaft.

that looks like rust if it is i would clean it up before lubing.
you can move the shaft around and tell if there is any binding on the front ujoint.
i would put it all together and before tightening the axle bolts i would tighten the nuts to the drive shaft tube first.
just looked in manual torque first to 20Nm then to 64Nm.
the manual has a tightening sequence looking at pic should be inside top** out side bottom**inside bottom** outside top.

I thought this was the other way round?
Tighten the axle first and then the drive shaft?

I think I have already got my moneys worth, but being Scottish I am going to squeeze every last drop I can....

For those of you who have not done this before, the inner ring behind the the shaft splines is a foam collar that you need to bring forward over the shaft splines to support it so you can easily reinstall the final drive. It took me a while to figure this out. You will not be able to get the final drive back on without this foam collar. I had to put some wd 40 in between the collar and the shaft cover and use a hanger to bring it forward over the splines.

Tighten the axle first and then the drive shaft?

+1 on this. Nip the final drive bolts up lightly then tighten the axle shaft to align it then torque the final drive nuts.

MANUAL SAYS
before tightening the bevel box nuts, fully insert the wheel spindle through the swing arm to ensure it will realign with the swing arm when the wheel is installed.
then it tells you how to tighten the nuts then it tells you to put on the tire.
