Shaft Splines

Will be replacing the rear tire next Tuesday, with another Excedra Max of course, and this time, after 99k miles, will be removing the rear drive to check the shaft splines which have not been lubed since new. What exactly am I going to be looking for in terms of damage etc? Anyone got pics of damaged splines? Since the dealer will be changing out the tire I will bring in the final drive also so they can take a look.

Also just want to confirm that the correct method to reinstall the final drive is to have the wheel back on before final torquing of the shaft nuts.

You'll see a very dry shaft/spline .. there will be debris inside the housing. Won't look pretty if it hasn't been lubed all it's life. Remember Triumph has never included lubeing the drive shaft in 'any' of it's service schedules or updates. I had mine replaced outside of warranty period after jumping up and down.

Thanks Tomcat. Hoping for the best but expecting the worst. I do know that just before I picked up the bike the dealer replaced the final drive with a new one due to a recall because of leaky seals. So maybe they generously lubed it then. I am surprised the splines have lasted this long. But hey, my primary TPS lasted 90k miles, and the output shaft bearing and cam chain are still going strong.....as far as I know anyway....

Speaking of this, what would the recommended lube interval be if it were in the manual as it should ? And, what is the lube specified or recommended ? Lastly, how much trouble (how involved) to expose the splines in order to service them ?

Every rear tire change (about 5 to 7K) is what I do.
Certainly no more than 10K miles or so I would think.

Just remove the 4 nuts holding the final drive to the shaft cover and slide them apart.
I use Honda Moly60 lube. It's what Honda uses on the Gold Wings. Only takes a small amount. I lube mine at every tire change.

If you have the back wheel off its only another 4 bolts to get at the splines.

It's a no brainer to do it every time you change a rear tyre or at the most every 10k miles if you're a darksider. I change the rear diff oil at these intervals too. Diff oil isn't prohibitively expensive and you use such a small amount it also seems like a no brainer to me.

Given the expense of replacing these parts then prevention is most certainly better than the cure
