All,
The H & B bag has a protrusion that sticks to the inside towards the rear tire. I just cut the bracket to fit around that protrusion. Then I simply drilled another hole, you will cut one off when you make the modification. I then used the bolts that came with the brackets. The only other mod required was to remove a latch on the rear of the bag. It is riveted on, I drilled out the rivets and covered with some reflective vinyl. That reflective vinyl is also what I used on the bottom of the bags as well as the centers of my brake discs, It is actually black,(believe it or not I chose that color), but when light hits it it shines, the flash of the camera is what "lights them" up in my pictures.
I'm on duty today, firefighter 24 hour shift, but tomorrow I will post some pictures of mine off of the bike so you can see what I did.
Also just to let you know I have really put more weight in those bags than they recommend and I have never had a problem.
The only thing I didn't like about the whole set up is that the easy brackets are made to angle out at the bottom for more clearance. I wish they were straight up and down. If I were to do it again, I would check out the "Ghost Brackets" and see if they also angle out. I don't think that is required for the Rocket with these bags.
The radiator shrouds are plastic so they have to be painted, I had those done at the same time as the fairing, I'm no painter! The wire mesh I did powder coat and yes I bead blasted first, not sure if it is required but I wanted to give the powder something to hold on to.
The fairing is a 1983 Harley FXRT model, If my research is correct it was designed in a wind tunnel. It does an excellent job of protecting me, but man is it hot behind there! I have about 2 million hours of mod work on it, slight exaggeration, but alot. Had to remove 4" of the interior from each side to make it fit on the wide Rocket front end.
The exhaust is made from the Jardine header, I then built it from there back myself. The muffler is a Supertrapp aluminum model. I made a baffle to bolt on where the discs normally mount. I welded the slash cut tip, (also aluminum) to that baffle. I have done all of the powder coating on that bike and I did the exhaust with some hi-temp powder coat that is supposed to be rated at 1000 degrees F. It looks great but has started to lift in places, I will end up having them ceramic coated, can't recommend the hi temp powder, at least for a "do it yourself-er" like me.
