Run premium fuel?

For those stating run what the manual states, and the manual states contradictory grades.....??
Here's how it works (I think): The RON number is measured in an engine running at 900 RPM. MON (motor octane number) is measured with an engine running at 600 RPM. In North American, we use AKI (anti knock index) which is RON+MON/2. The equivalent octane requirements in North America run about 3-4 below RON. SO 95 RON is about 91 AKI. Run what floats your boat but might take a close look at the CAUTION on the fuel grade page!

Still, my question is BOTH grades listed in manual, 91 and 87 as minimum.
Note the box on page 79 stating if pinging occurs at steady speed, get higher octane. So maybe I will try 87 and if no pinging, no harm? Isn't that how one determines if octane too low?

This probably doesn't answer your question, but page 15, which shows where all the stickers are, shows that the gas tank sticker says minimum 91 octane.

Gas isn't that expensive on a motorcycle that is used as a toy. I'm sticking with 91.

You are right, sticker shows they took octane from 1st paragraph rather than second on pg 79.
I am curious not cause I cannot afford premium, but also performance. This thread got me thinking about it.
I remember my Honda vtx 1800 actually ran better on lower octane, no pinging.
I may try the lower and see if there is any observable difference. Would not the ECU make changes to prevent pre- detonation anyway as this is a modern machine? I really don't mind less cost. 😄

in order for the ecu to sense a problem the bike would have to have a knock sensor. i do not know if the 20 up has one?
i do not think that it has enough advanced timing to ping maybe if u bought Mexico gas.
the more the rpm the less likely it will ping just dont lug it.
