Hi R3Tex,

Are you wearing jeans / pants and still have to tie bandanas to your calf - or are you bare-legged?

Jeans...don't ride in shorts unless I'm just tooling around a camp ground. At cruise the jeans seem to do OK, but in traffic it doesn't take but a couple of stops and your right leg is pretty hot...as in leaving a red mark hot. My plan is to fabricate a small heat shield that will protect my right leg when it is on the ground cuz there is no way I'm changing pipes...absolutely love 'em. I've been kicking around the idea of incorporating the cover for the rear brake reservoir into the heat shield so that it is one piece and uses the mounting location for the current reservoir cover. Right now I'm enjoying riding it too much to spend much shop time on more mods.

Hi R3Tex,

Thanks for the info'. I see from your install pics that you have the black headers and I would imagine that they put out rather more radiant heat than the silver.

I'm in Dallas and I get down to Houston alot. I wonder if I might contact you the next time I'm heading your way and take a look at the CES in real life?

Mark

Its booked in for the dyno tune on the 15th.

Hey, Mate, if you be of a mind find out why those OZ dynos seem to read so d@mn high?
I can't understand how a motor rated by the factory at 140 hp can increase to 169 hp with only intake and exhaust mods ???
Good luck and be prepared for a shock!
The power overall went up 20% on mine = VERY noticeable and like a new motor to ride.
BTW - the sound is pure ecstasy! Especially up between 5K and 7K!!!

The air is better down here.:D The Roadster isn't 140hp stock. A standard Roadster will produce between 120 to 122hp on the same Oz Dyno that shows between 161 and 169 with Pipe and filter mod. That's around 33% increase for around $2500.

A word of advice for what it's worth, when I had my bike dyno tuned old mate at the centre said you don't really want to be here when we do it, so like an expectant father I went up the pub for a couple of nice fluffy schooners of beer, and waited for the phone call,I saw my T bucket dyno tuned a few years ago and was sure the eight pistons were going to come up through the heads, I am glad I didn't see my touring bouncing of the new rev limit of 6500rpm and bucking and jerking as they shut it off ,the poor little thing!

Mate,
I really disagree with this. If the tuner knows his stuff, why would her not want you around?
I have used four different tuners five times since 2006. Two gave me a loaner and sent me away citing shop insurance.
One flat said I couldn't silently watch as he wanted to "protect his product".
This fellow spoke freely about everything, the good and bad and already knew pretty much what he would get out of my motor and told me so beforehand. I asked about the Aussie dynos getting 169 hp and he merely shrugged it off saying it was the riding results and the what is in between the before and after tuning that counted. not the calibration of the dyno.
Nels was proud of what he does and willing to share information and answer all my questions about his magic (my word-not his). I did NOT feel the engine abused at any time. His use of the throttle and gear shifting was very smooth. Original runs were well below red line. As the tune took shape RPM increased to 6500 and at the finish just under 7000.
He switched the screen to a large tach and speedo with a colored fuel mixture ratio underneath. Here he took 4th gear to red line and the speed was 145mph!!! He then ran up 5th gear to 170mph!!!
Now I understand that this does NOT equate to the real world - BUT I was hard as nails anyway!:p:thumbsup:

My bro-in-law (a former factory Triumph dirt track racer) wanted a demo versus his new Gold Wing.
I was able to accommodate by greasing it with him in 4th. He hung for about three sec then disappeared behind.
It felt SO FINE I stayed on it until about 6K when I looked and saw the speedo nearing 140 (135 on the GPS), I shifted to 5th for a few sec before running out of highway. I WAS MAJOR STOKED to say the least. In the next couple days it was twisty time - real good ones even better than those of 92 out of Blue Mesa we rode at RAAIX. This motor between 3K and 6K is super smooth and throttle control in the twisty is GREATLY improved. I also noticed the need for less trail braking since adding the Progressive front springs and 444 rear.
Bottom line is I am now more excited to ride than I was when I first got the bike!

I be not @R3Tex, BUT I do have some illustrative data you may find interesting and amusing:
My-Armored-Waterproff-Britc.jpg My-Riding-Dickies.jpg
Do I give a $hit? Heck no! The ride was worth a dozen each of these.
Strangely, my leg never got burned and I quickly learned to keep my right foot outboard a little more when on the right side freeway peg. The center pipe is the culprit.
Another cool thing was the ugly black mark left by my protective waterproof riding pants caused me worry as to how best clean without damage to the shiny ceramic. After fretting for an hour or so, I stopped thinking baking it on would be worse. Since my leather glove was soaked from rain, I used it to wipe across the stained bend of the center header.
THE UGLY MARK DISAPPEARED COMPLETELY!!!
I sent a huge attaboy email to Trevor and Leslie at CES.:thumbsdown:???

Mine was already running triple filters and Jardine pipes with a tuneboy tune so I wont get 20% increase. I will get my tuner to tune it so its running right, not for peak hp. I would rather it running sweet as than win the hp wars.:):)
