I spent the afternoon at Lynnwood Cycle Barn, having gone in to have the new TPS installed. The tech, who is apparently very good, did not like how the new TPS looked or worked. Apparently it as a mechanical function that he felt was sluggish just fiddling with it on the work bench. It was also getting the same readings as the one that was to be replaced. He then checked the stepper motor and found the reading was just a bit low. He took one off a new 08 that just arrived (and I believe the TPS just to be sure) installing it on mine. That was it. The Rocket runs great and I am ready for Tahoe.

This one was really goofy because the problem was so erratic. Just to recap, I started experiencing idle problems within about 500 miles after the 386 install. I took it back to get the second recall tune about three weeks ago. It ran great for about 175 miles and then really tanked. I still don't understand how the stepper seemed OK after the second tune but then tanked again. It is a mystery to me but the guys at Cycle Barn fixed it.

GASKET: did you manage to see the process of R&R'n the stepper motor and TPS?

did they need to remove the throttle bodies?

do you have a cost esitmate of what they charged for the work?

..........................

Im still thinking its my stepper motor that has caused erratic idle issues..

going on a couple of weeks now with the stepper motor unplugged and the bike is running better that it ever has.. (well except for the cool morning startups) but after about 5 minutes of warmup during my ride to work, its good to go.

weekend rides I have gained my throttle control again through twisties and down hill engine breaking

before when the stepper motor was connected. It would take two attempts to get the bike started.

right now the bike starts up at first ignition.

I managed to disconnect the stepper motor so my bike is idling at just about 500rpm and Ive found out that the RIII will idle at about 500rpm.. it gives that slight "just about to die" lopping that those harley owners like..but it stays running..

plus now i even feel SAFER w/o that darn stepper motor interfeering with sthite!!!

George, I did not see them do the work and it was done under warranty. There is another thread on the forum that said that the TPS replacement was a relatively easy one without requiring removal of the throttle bodies. I just checked my paperwork and they charged .21 hr under warranty. The stepper motor also is easily removed. My friend, who has a performance v-twin shop, did so in in front of me. It was a snap. I don't know what the stepper costs but it is a pretty simple mechanical do-dad. It sure sounds like it is the stepper with yours. Mike

Maybe its time for you guys to find a TPS from another bike that will do the job.
Didnt someone say their was one from a Suzuki that was the same?

Get packing Mike :D

Wonderful news Mike! Glad it's all fixed and wished I was seeing you in Tahoe. I still have to bury the evidence!
