Rocket 3 Classic - Electrical Problems

... The dealership let me know about the blowing fuse so I'm not 100% sure if this was post or pre engaging something on the circuit.

Are you saying that the dealership TOLD you it is blowing a fuse ......... and did nothing about it?

oh no no no...

The dealership where I bought the bike also has a workshop attached. The issue happened earlier this week and they were fully booked but kindly said they'd give me 10 minutes to try and see if it was a quick fix. That ten minutes involved checking the fuse and the indicator control/relay box (sorry for wrong terminology!). As the fuse was then blowing, they deemed it wouldn't be a quick fix and I'd need to book it in properly.

Of course the bike was fine when I bought it and during the 3 month warranty!

Right... Situation as of this morning.

Bike turns on and works fine
Alarm also engages and disengages as normal
Fuse replaced and did not blow with ignition off
Did not blow with ignition switched on
Brake light now operating as normal (?!) using both pedal and handle, fuse doesn't blow
Right signal next, initially made a weird electrical grinding noise then settled into the normal ticktick relay noise. Indicator lights don't work and nor does dial light. Also the parking lights and tail/brake light throb in time with the relay ticking.

Tried disengaging signal and reengaging, no weird noise just straight to normal tick but still no lights.

Tried left side, same as above.

So finally I checked the two front indicator bulbs, they're fine.

I think you're going to say it's the indicator control box thingy?? Which is what the mechanic thought it might be when I first called him earlier in the week. But then all the other weird electrical goings on happened, which seem to have gone for now.......... Gulp.

Hi Scott, I had similar problems on my 2008 classic with lights pulsing when using my indicators, just before my datatool alarm died and left me stranded on a German autobahn. Got going again after help from some of the guys here.

I wonder if it's just a side effect of the power not going through the indicators properly... I hope it isn't the alarm dying

Sounds like you have an earth/ground/negative problem with the indicators maybe as it sounds like the negative is trying to find its way through other circuits. Check all connections at relay box and battery.

looking at the wiring diagram, the alarm seems to be the only common thing with the indicators and break light.

Have you got it booked in at your dealership? If so it should be easy for them to disconnect and bypass the alarm to see if that solves the problem.Or you could do it yourself if you wanted. I done it at the side of the road.

Yeah it's booked in for next Saturday.

Noticed the dial lights throb too and the relay for the signals gets very hot when indicator engaged.

I don't really have the know how to bypass the alarm unfortunately.

At least I'll be able to give them a list of symptoms and things tried thanks to this thread. Should cut down the work time needed and therefore any cost!

Hope it's a quick fix Scott. Let us know how you get on.
