I have the stock ME880 tires on my bike. Love them. Got about 5000 miles so far and still plenty of tread left. I don't expect to get past 10K miles on ANY set of motorcycle tires and that's perfectly OK with me. People who try to argue that motorcycle tires should last for 20K miles or more don't understand the physics of motorcycles or the engineering behind the tires. Bike tires, by there very nature, are not intended to last the same amount of miles as a car tire because they are two totally different things that encounter two totally different types of forces, heat, wear, etc.

To me, it seems really silly trying to irrationally extend your tire mileage way past what they are capable of just because you don't want to spend the money to buy replacements when they are needed. I simply plan ahead and set aside money to buy a new set of front/rear tires every year I ride regardless of wear. I treat the tires on a motorcycle as an engineered system that is part of the bike. Replace in sets and don't deviate too far from the factory specs.

i am not going to argue with u take or not take the advice of every one.:banghead:
if u have plenty of money i am sure the metz will work good for u.:)

ME 880s are garbage, and the bike wasn't designed around the tire lmao. Do you think a frame out of spec enough to wear a tire abnormally is acceptable? The chassis engineer who designed the Rocket is the worst engineer in the history of man if the tolerance is so tight that expected manufacturing deviation is enough to cause a tire "the bike was designed around" to wear abnormally.

Just like to point out, "Plenty of tread left" does not a good tire make if the wear is uneven....

Anyway, it really matters none as I'll never run the failure Pirelli Budget brand again, off to a real tire company for my hoops.

Coming from a family of engineers, I find it hilarious, they all do the same thing when faced with a reality that doesn't match theory, blame human error :p

It takes me less time to swap out both the crap metzs with Avon/Excedra than it took you to type out those posts UberR3. although the stock front springs are inadequate & need to be replaced with Progressives, all else being equal on the bike, tolerances out or not, the Avon has been by far better than the Metz as far as not cupping goes on mine

YES true I agree

It's absolutely not unreasonable to expect over 10k miles. Pilot Road 1,2,3,4 anyone? VASTLY superior grip to anything that fits an R3, and known to go well into the teens and twenties for mileage on 550lb+ sport touring bikes.

Pilot Power 3s, unbelievably high grip limits, cheap as chips, and regularly last right around 10k.

If Michelin would actually pull their head out of their asses and build a triple compound set of cruiser tires, 67W front and 72W rear ratings they would make a killing. It is not realistic to expect such a tire could easily last 10-15 k and provide a new level of grip never before seen in cruiser tires....

Try googling "ME880 Cupping" and then tell me there isn't a problem, 10+ pages of Google results...

@UberR3
Would like to know where are you from?

Regarding your posts in this thread:
While I am in concert with most of what you say, I disagree regarding the Metzelers.
Motors are not designed around a set of tires! Manufacturers negotiate the cheapest deal possible, just as they do with other components like suspension and brakes.

I went round and round with a number of Metzeler tires on my Kaw V2K - suspension, steer head, load . . . they all sucked! Figuring perhaps a better result on the R3R, I was sadly disappointed - right out of the gate with my NEW R3R the same Metzelers were WORSE, and worse in several aspects.

Are you actually stating, in your engineering opinion, that our motors are NOT checked for proper frame, wheels and suspension alignment prior to leaving the factory?

I am indeed of the opinion that the engineers who design the motorcycles and those that design the tires know what they are doing! I believe subjective opinions carry very little scientific weight. I also believe the preponderance of Rocket riders who have been dissatisfied with Metzeler tire performance on their Rockets constitutes a worthy issue that remains unaddressed or even explained by Metzeler and corrected by Bridgestone and Avon, to name a couple.
