RIIIT Tranny problems

new owner here! traded in my V Max, on a standard Rocket, I have not picked up my bike yet, but did take it for a little spin up the highway at the dealer, I could not get it to shift into 2nd gear! is this normal? I told the dealer, he said it takes a few thousand miles for the engine/transmission to loosen up! comments!

Had no problems shifting mine when I got her. the only problem I had was explaining to the wife why my bike changed colors while she was on vacation which if my boy would not have told her it was a new bike she would have thought I painted mine:D
Oh not that it matters but mine is not a R3T maybe the heel/toe shifter needs a little adjustment.

It's almost as though Triumph knew it was going to break. When it breaks, the pieces (if any that get loose) fall down in the front cavity and not down in the case so it's easy to retrieve and not messy other than an acute loss of gear selection.

It's till rideable by clutchless shifts and taking off in first on the starter motor (it will remind you of when you were a kid and drove your car in the driveway on the starter motor)......we all did that so don't deny it.:)

Yes it does take a while to get broken in. Ususally by the time you get the first oil change and get the synthetic in there it gets a little easier. And you get broken in too.:D Welcome to the site btw.

What Pigger said. The factory fill is dino oil for break in purposes. Once that's outta there and things get bedded in, the shift actuation improves and the clutch gets more lineal.

Your first service is really important so make sure you get that bike into the dealer and get it done. After that, the intervals get spaced out but I believe that most of us here like to double up on the service interval anyway...5K instead of the recommended 10.

Thanks again for all the 411! I'll have to take it with me, as I don't think my dealer has seen this problem. It could help me as well as others.

Its true the transmission is a little tight when new, but, the bike SHOULD shift into 2nd gear and I would not take delivery until this has been proven or fixed. Welcome to the site btw!!
Jump in fellas if Im wrong but I believe the bike should shift into all gears.:D

mutt

I am not arguing with anyone as mine shifted good the first test drive with 1.8 miles on it two days later I showed up for my 500 mile service. to be honest other then a idle tune recall and one TPS everything else I broke without Triumphs help:D
even the lifter shafts which could be designed better I would have to blame myself. Learning phase I guess that and I enjoy using the power. Others clutch and tranny problems could also depend on the tech that adjusts the clutch some shops employ Hardley machanics not Technicians
This is especially true were I bought mine as when I went back for the 500 mile service I ask the tech to raise the head lights so I can see more then the front wheel at night and he had the balls enough to tell me they don't adjust!!!!!

So I never went back to them sure I have to drive 170 miles to a good dealer but when you find one you trust it is worth it.

Now after all the mods and **** I have broke I get solid advice from other captains on these sites and do most of the work myself don't get me wrong I am no expert thats why I make mistakes so I can learn:D At no time has any captain steered me wrong but there are those times when I did not hear or read it right do to the lack of O2 and light where my head sometimes is.

Maybe its just uncomon to your dealer or he is just talking about the R3T which has the same parts as the R3 at any rate sometimes they are hard to get and as for tent stakes they are not the best.

keep in mind although they are weakly designed they usually fail do to improper adjustment and or say pulling on them when your clutch is in full lock up is another reason as with one of mine. I do know of people who have put tons of miles on them without breaking one me I am not as lucky but I have learned. I might add I have yet to break a lifter piece but I thought if I can break the shaft well you know:D

This is why I state proper adjustment is critical to the life span of the shaft and Flip is right about the other reasons that can cause failure!!!! to much pull and over reving the engine can cause a burn out affect between the two pieces do to spring pressures which can tend to over thrust the clutch head bearing and or flex the lifter shaft to far to many times till failure occurs.
Just my 2 cents worth.

When mine went, I posted the question here on the forum and got a lot of info and pictures. The adjustment was mentioned a couple of times so I think it may be a big issue. Only problem I have is the adjustment always feels to slack. I am used to my levers being a little less "floppy". Since I got mine replaced, I haven't touched the cable. I am heading to the dealer tomorrow and I am going to have them check it out and make sure it is where it is supposed to be. Going to check on those new tires also.
