I had a '74. Hardest starting bike I've ever run across. Tons of compression and no flywheel effect. Had about 2 times as much power as it did brakes and suspension. It was a blast to ride though.
The '71 had about six more H.P. and same brakes and suspension. The C.D.I. advance was totally unpredictable making it #1 on the list of worst dirtbike ever. I adapted RM remote reservoir nitrogen shocks and modified the ignition and cylinder porting. Yeah it was a blast to ride!
(1) Yamaha XJ900 the most reliable Jap bike I ever owned I did 3 trips to Phillip Island Grand Prix one day down and one day home (on the old Hume Hwy) 1100 ks each way , I sold it with 20000Klms on it to a mate who was a Copper at Nth Sydney and he commuted to work for 4 years a 220kround trip and sold it with 220000 Klms and it was still running sweet with original untouched motor Trans and Diff only the exhaust was replaced and routine servicing tyres, filters ect,

Yep, correct on the lids, they were trick. No gloves for better feel/grip. The wife wears them now though, she has seen me ride before. We're 2014 state champs on the Speed Triple in my avatar. Pic is not old sorry.
