From me, not Nev...... please bear in mind that he has a business to run and will fit in tests of the filter with different configurations as and when time permits, but he can't down tools and run a series of dyno tests just for information, as some seem to be thinking. As he gains more knowledge of how they perform, he will let us know.
 
To be Honest seeing as the Pipercross is just bigger version of what the RamAir is, it would have to flow better than the RX 4040
If it's Wayne's Pipercross with the custom radius inlets backplates he was developing - It is going to flow WAY more than a standard engine needs. Pretty much the sort of thing found on F1 car engines.

Just waiting to see Les's pictures of Mitzy's "claw" now. I know I want one - but......
 

until someone posts dyno results out performing the figures in my signiture ill stick with the k&N filters. if anything ill change to the 4040 filters
 
All it needs is some rich Aussie with K&N's to pop over and have Nev dyno with both - and then maybe ride away with a Ramair fitted.
 
AFAIK - The Carpenter track engines use the OEM runners unfiltered - so they work fine to 9000rpm ish. Can't believe Bob would run them if the chocked the intake. The runners themselves are a compromise shape too. tbh I think it's more about suppressing sound resonance. They do.

The factory filter system has a mass of bottlenecks and I've eliminated these one by one over time. Every step makes a difference. I don't have dyno access - but some of the "jumps" are far from minimal.

1) The under-seat snorkel. The inlets are EASY to block if you're not thinking. And the air in that area is turbulent. Very poor if you have a passenger.
2) The Snorkel from underseat filter to inner plenum. Does NOT smooth flow air - you only have to look at it.
3) The two ovals between inner and outer plenum - These are VERY restrictive. I opened the top of an outer plenum and added filter area - imo this bettered triple K&N's



The OEM filter setup is so designed for multiple reasons. Most of which are NOT about performance. A lot is emissions and noise.

That's true. Even so if people have already spent on 2780's and are not worried about the noise, loss of power and more frequent cleaning I can understand why they wouldn't want to spend again.

This is really good news imo, it looks like the initial criteria has been met in that there is now a viable alternative to triple 2780's, particularly if starting from scratch.

Noise, or actually a lack of it is definitely a priority with the OEM set up.

I don't really care for the crickets but a nice roar would be nice to have.

I really think to that there probably needs to be a plenum of some sort in the intake tract. Velocity stacks of the correct length and design might also be a good way to go. I do know that a longer intake tract as measured from the intake valve seat tends to increase low end volumetric efficiency, at the expense of top end efficiency. At 9,000 rpm I doubt we need any velocity stack at all, just a well designed bell mouth to direct and smooth air flow. The Ramair seems to have this designed into it.
 
 
ive never heard the chirping people speak of either lol . TC took my bike for a ride and said it doesnt make the chirping noise others are getting.
 
I only ever had minimal chirping and then only if I was cruising and held the throttle just off power. Never bothered me at all.
