Riding Motor Since 1950
Roughly 1,100 miles for me so we will probably overnight somewhere along the way just so that we don't arrive looking like hammered dog $hit. 300 - 400 miles in a day isn't that bad as long as we get a decently early start. If we follow the "Kickstands up at 10" model we'll be riding in the dark though. One other thing I suggest is that we put together a few other Captains to lead rides so that we don't end up with one large group all trying to do the same ride. Last time in Maggie Valley it was hard to keep a large group together and on track to complete the ride by dark. Last thing we want to do is lose somebody. I have never been in the area before, but as long as I have a map I'd be happy to help lead or ride drag.
I habla, Amigo. It will be about 1400 miles for me to Ouray. That's why I think using Monday for R&R and for "get to know ya" and sud suckin' time would be good.
I have had better fortune with kicks up at 8 AM for rides around 400 miles. I be NO iron butt - I like my coffee and butt breaks every 120 or so miles.
With a large group, a short rider meet is important. The route should be laid out to everybody. If someone wishes to drop out for a photo or a piss - no problema, just catch up. The leader should insure there are no stragglers at EVERY turn off the current road. IF there are stragglers, we should stop and wait up. Stragglers should also be mindful of looking for us at the roadside in case we are on a break. If there are many, many participants (and I hope so) we should consider breaking up into groups of like ten riders grouped by riding speed preference. The previous guidelines would apply to each group as well.
I recommend Nolton leads the first day ride . . . and buys all the beer on Monday!
