R3T Transmission Trouble

Retention spring

My 2008 r3 standard same deal pretty happy it was only the spring thought it was the gear box

I just got it minutes ago, here it is:
Dennis,
We had the clutch cover off the bike and found the detent spring is broken. The technician took pics of the damage which I have added to your open case with Triumph. Unfortunately they are closed over the weekend, so I will not hear a response until Monday at the earliest. I am off on Monday’s so I will send you their response as soon as I return. Your machine is still under stock factory warranty and labor along with parts are covered by the manufacturer for warrantable items. The only “gray” area is with diagnostic time. Most manufacturers don’t cover any. Triumph covers 1 hour. We do not have any additional diagnostic time in your bike beyond that one hour at this time.

Although this diagnosis is probably correct and definitely cheaper than a major transmission tear-down, the whole handling of this mess has left a bad taste in my mouth so to speak. It has soured my opinion of the Triumph company and has cast doubts upon this dealer.
 

Not to worry if the detent is covered which it should be. then Triumph would pay the 4 hours labor to change it which some has been done already just to inspect/diagnostic.

If they pay for it then you find more problems Triumph gets to pay another hour of diagnostic bull pucky because they did not go further. You should be ok though most detent spring problems are not a sign of tranny problems.
 
I can't even in my wildest dreams understand why the dealership would even put that comment in the Email when they were not going to try and charge for it! Bad public relations to be sure!

I know warranty diagnostic time must be documented with any manufacturer, along with the time to complete the repair. Both automotive and M/C. But, if Triumph attempted to charge diagnosis time on a warranty repair on my bike, I would be looking at selling the bike and going to another M/C brand!! I believe this question is covered in the "Magnuson Moss" act also. I would have to re-read the verbage in the act to find out.

I'm real failure with Harley, as a good friend was a general manager for the local Harley dealer. He told me Harley wants the repair order "time stamped" on a time clock if the dealer wants to charge Harley any additional time over the first one hour. But Harley WILL pay it, as the bike is under warranty.

I can't believe Triumph would be foolish enough to attempt to charge a customer for diagnosis time under basic warranty! Maybe it's events like this that cause Triumph not to have a very large foot print in the states!
 
The one with the hooks. My spring had a broken hook. Luckily, I found both pieces! The large part of the sring was down in the sump and I found it by sticking a magnet down thru the oil and came up with it.
 
Yes there is a little area in the front of the sump pan that catchs a lot of debris.



Pulling the sump pan is easy and a good way to check for issues.
Say if you want to take a peak at you output drive helical gears



you can see a lot more with a scope

Thanks! Now that we are talking about the issue, it appears several here have had the spring break! Hopefully Triumph will spec out a higher quality spring from their supplier in the future. The OP has an 010. I have an 011. Makes me a bit concerned!
 

I wonder if its just a bad batch from the distributor. My 06 spring is still good (knock on wood)
