2010 Triumph R3T Black "Darksider" imitation 70cc motorized "Harley Davidson" bicycle
My 2010 R3T is not shifting gears ,It is stuck in first gear and I can not get it to go into neutral at all. It will go into neutral if the engine is not running. When I get it going I can start shifting thru 2,3,4,5 but not every time ,and slowing down and stopping it will not go into neutral with the engine running.
Is this the detent spring? If it is then I might be able to repair it myself, do I need to buy gaskets and any other parts other than the detent spring?
Is this a familiar problem?
I hope that someone who has been through this problem can help ?
thanks for any advice..

First, make sure that your clutch freeplay is adjusted EXACTLY right. If it is not correct then it can cause those problems.

If that is correct then the detent spring is a possibility. It is about 4 hours work if you haven't done it before, and is not a difficult job. There are a number of threads on it. There is a simple "How To" in my signature.

Can you select all gears with the engine off? And if so does the shifting through the gears feel as it should?
If your answers are yes to both questions I would suspect the clutch. But could be as simple as the type and age of oil you are running too.

while u are not running if u roll it forward just a little to take off the load will it go into neutral ok?
is it possible to be in neutral and the neutral light not on?
i think that u pop out of gear with the detent spring broken.
like mittzy said different brand oils and old oil will makee it shift different.
i always have trouble with neutral sometimes coasting at 4 0r 5 miles if i try it goes in or if i roll it forward a bit i can find neutral.

I select neutral just prior to stopping at the lights - its just easier.
And always full synthetic - I recon you cant over oil/lubricate anything both in quality and intervals (Quantity is a different matter)

Thanks everyone for all your help, I will check the clutch adjustment first, and I did switch oil brands and am now using Amsoil synthetic but I might have over filled it a bit,so I will drain a bit out. Yes it will shift into neutral with the engine shut off. Rolling it forward with the engine running it will not go into neutral but it will if engine is not running.
Have to get a new battery too, it is not starting unless I boost it from the car. Even charging it overnight it will not start all I get is the fuel pump going on for a couple seconds. and a click , click noise.

Check that all your battery connections are clean and tight - and the other ends of the cables at the starter motor and where the -ve cable connects to the engine. Also, if you have a bunch of other connections on the +ve battery terminal then that will cause problems as well.

If the Amsoil synthetic is motorcycle specific your fine? If it isn't it really won't hurt right away, but it could lead to your clutch slipping down the road with the added friction modifiers usually in non motorcycle oil.

Also, did this shifting problem happen suddenly or over a period of time. Suddenly usually means something broke unless someone adjusted your clutch recently and didn't include any freeplay. Over time could indicate clutch fibres coming apart causing the clutch to not fully release or drag.
