just some food for thought, The Roadster has lower peg rail at front than the Standard which caused one of our Aussie Captains to come undone when he cranked it over just that bit to far and it dug in, Not sure I'd be putting a 140/80/17 on the front .... could be tempting fate the "150/80/17 (OEM size) Dunlop Elite 3" is near as fast steering as the Comander II it just falls into corners with great feed back

HansO,
I really prefer the handling produced by the additional forward weight shift resultant from the Excedra Max 240/55R16 rear and the 140/75R17140 up front.
Figuring more would be better, I tried a 130 front. That tire did indeed allow the front of the peg mount rail to touch down. Stupid is as stupid does!
I have now gone back to a 140 and expect no problems as I had a 140 on whilst running hard on the Dragon 8 times with no problems . . . there.
Everything from peg rear drug like hell.

Added to my tire info. ****, in 9000 mi. Must make a desesion.
Do appreciate the feed back.

Roger,
Just my opinions here, Amigo.
Definitely ditch the Metzeler for a Bridgestone Excedra Max 240/55R16 on the rear.
You have options on the front. Dunlop D251 150/80R17 - Avon Cobra 150/80R17 - Bridgestone Excedra G701 150/80R17 are all good tires.
FYI - Many Captains have gone down to a 140/17 size tire on the front with success. There are several brand options at that size as well.

Thanks for the info. Adding to others to digest when the time comes.
Good to be able to assess R3 Owners knowledge:thumbsup:

If your still running the original exhaust system on a Roadster and the 150 tyre up the front the pipes will scrape long before the peg rail gives you trouble. But if you have an after market pipe with better ground clearance it's okay to wear the pegs away but don't push till the pegs fold up on the stops.

To me Metzeler looks to be the ONLY tire manufacture making a tire that fits both the front and rear of the Rocket.
The Dunlop D251 is far superior tire IMHO; but, they make OEM sizes only for the Rocket Touring and they do not make 140/80X17 for my front.
I'm thinking my R3R may need a set of 17 inch wheels in order to run the best tires.

Avon Cobra come in OEM size - 240/50x16 and 150/80x17. Great option for the front (I like it best but yet to try a couple of others) and 2nd best out of the three to choose from for the rear. Metz is the least desirable at either end of the bike. Not too bad when brand new but very quickly go off.

Roger, there are only 2 rear tyres in the OEM size (240/50x16) for a Rocket - Metzler and Avon Cobra. One other tyre will fit; the Bridgestone Exedra Max 240/55x16. Plenty has been written on here about where many of us think it is a better tyre all round and that the higher profile is a huge plus. There are no other motorcycle type options for the rear in stck size. The problem is the 16" rim and the clearance limitations of the swing arm/shaft drive.

On the front, there is a little more choice but still no Pirellis or Michelins in stock size. Avon and Dunlop seem to be pretty good in OEM size (150/80x17) and there are good alternatives in non-stock sized Michelin and Bridgestone. Be aware that the Bridgestone Exedra n OEM size is NOT an Exedra Max, has been tried by several of us and is not preferred. The Exedra Max option for the 17" rim is a 130.

Foot peg feelers on both sides of Rocket were just slightly worn when I purchased. I be needing to put a little more wear on them.

Keep an eye on the front corner of the left hand pegrail. When you start seeing wear there thats the limit. Since I got my new pegrail I havn't scraped it and don't intend to don't even touch the pegs down much anymore. Still play hard but not for keeps. When your over 50 and put it down the road for the first time in over 25 years it makes you have a long hard look at what your doing.
