Safety, Performance then Mileage in that order, Always my priorities when choosing my tyres, there is very little performance difference between the Excedra and the Federal 595 but I know I can trust the Federal in the wet and any tyre on my bike has to give good feed back or it wont stay on there, it has to give you the confidence to be able to push the envelope.
As I said the jury is still out ..... we'll see,....... Just sayin'

P.S I loved the Michelin Commander II it felt safe it preformed but gave sh!te mileage so was chucked on the scrap heap

I knew that would be your response - right after I hit the post button! :(
Agree wholeheartedly regarding the Commander. Put a new one on to start my crisscross US trip last summer. It was into wear bare at 4100 miles.
On a front tire, that really sux!

4100 mile = 6,598 km I got barely 5,500 km (3,417 mile) out of mine so you didn't do to bad

Steve, wasn't it you that followed up with your dealer about that crappy performing Michelin, only to find out that they had some defective versions of the tire in the marketplace.

As you know, I could have gotten 10K miles out of mine had I not replaced it prematurely in order to mount a mattced pair of Ex. Maxes (130 in front). Trust me, guys, when I say that I am a very aggressive rider, so it just doesn't compute that I would get orders of magnitude better mileage on a tire that Michelin themselves tout as a high mileage tire, unless the ones you had were defective in some way. Paul Bryant over in NZ had the same experience as you both, BTW.

It was indeed I.
Rocky Mountain ATV (where I been buying tires for ten years & I HIGHLY recommend) refunded my money on the tire.
Check them out - prices are the best as well. I just went back to a new 140 up front and shall try the Avon Cobra.
If it isn't up to par, I'll likely give the Commander one more try - just to be sure.

With all the other tire options preferred by experienced riders, I'm wondering why Triumph choice is Metz. As OME tire? Replaced my rear Metz after putting 600 mi. on tire for a total of 8900 mi. with another Metz. Dealer mechanic and sales person both strongly recommend staying with OME.

Up to this point, around 600 mi. Have not ridden aggressively but Metz. gives me smooth, stable corners and straights. Such an improvement over warn Metz.

This will probably get a few noses outa joint but I gotta say a hard ridden Goldwing will beat a hard ridden Rocket on the Lions road. Don't ask me how I know that I just do.For those that don't know the Lions road is a very narrow dangerous Mountian road on the QLD - NSW border.

Never had a Honda product I didn't like. Had I been shopping for a full dress tourer ride, Honda would defently been on shopping list.

once you put just about anything else out there on the front of your bike other than a Metz, you will know why most of us would never use them again the rear is a bit of personal choice but if you were wanting to stay with a bike tyre The Brigdestone Excedra Max is the the ducks guts, miles better than the Metz

To me Metzeler looks to be the ONLY tire manufacture making a tire that fits both the front and rear of the Rocket.
The Dunlop D251 is far superior tire IMHO; but, they make OEM sizes only for the Rocket Touring and they do not make 140/80X17 for my front.
I'm thinking my R3R may need a set of 17 inch wheels in order to run the best tires.

Putting the B.E. Max on by list to consider

Interesting! New info for me. Tkanks.

just some food for thought, The Roadster has lower peg rail at front than the Standard which caused one of our Aussie Captains to come undone when he cranked it over just that bit to far and it dug in, Not sure I'd be putting a 140/80/17 on the front .... could be tempting fate the "150/80/17 (OEM size) Dunlop Elite 3" is near as fast steering as the Comander II it just falls into corners with great feed back
