But what do you guys do if it takes a couple of seasons to get 10K on the old girl? I know that letting oil set in the crankcase over a winter is not the best to start a new season with, unless synthic has properties which allow that. I've gone with some of the other captains and change mine each spring after the initial warm-up (I never get 10K in a season).

I haven't been able to find it on the shelf lately but during this past season, I found the Mobil 1 4T racing oil on the shelf at Walmart. I'd pick up a quart every now & then for $8.50 per quart but they quit shelving it. I have enough for the up-coming season & will need to find another source. The guys at the local Oreilly's carry Mobil oils & said they would try to find some if I'd bring in an empty container so they would know exactly what it was I needed. $51 (plus tax) is not that bad I guess for 6 qts. Knock on wood, my old gal has never had to go the the "vet" for a checkup or service & I hope it continues for another handful of years. I'm not certain about the knock with the timing chain & gear. It comes & goes but never seems to be severe.

See ya.

I change at 10,000 miles or annually, whichever comes first. For me annually comes first. I've never worried much about making sure to change oil at the end of the riding season and it has never been a problem for me.

I did get about half a jug of oil back. Their labor rate is $86 per hour. 2 hour job plus parts / supplies and tax. I did review the invoice. Just feels like a lot for a first service. I have heard some brands (HD) charge more than $500 for their first services.

2 hrs!!!?? Did they weave the oil filter while you waited!:D That price seems excessive.
My dealer said all thay do is the oil change and check for any loose parts or anything that seems out of the ordinary. But not 2 hrs worth. Well you had it done and now ya know. At least your riding!!!

Oil Change

Oil change every 5k miles, just the look of the oil dirty is saying change me. I
also found that you can add an additional quart of oil to the tank and not having
any overflow problems at speed or stopped, increasing capacity I used mobil MC racing 10-40. Use at your own risk, I added oil slowly looking for any problems.

What about the filter?

I will be doing an annual before a 10k which means one oil change a season, I can live with a $100 for the oil. Now where can I get a filter, my nearest dealer is 50 miles away. Is there another source for the filters other than Triumph, like say K&N?

OOPS I just found the sticky on oil filters, disregard...

Its nice to see I can get all of my supplies from a local auto parts store, that makes life a lot easier and eases some of my concerns of being so far away from a Triumph dealer

Why you would allow the old oil to set in the beast all winter??

Im curious abouth this as I have never had a problem with leaving oil over the down months. But I dont know....is there a difference ?? is it a matter of mechanics or just preference??

Shear causes molecular break down. Additional metal eating acids can accumulate from other means as well. Regular engine warm ups can minimize damages. The amount of damages can be hotly debated.

For anyone interested here's a link to the Amsoil study on Motorcycle oil. Note that I'm an Amsoil dealer and the study was conducted by Amsoil. So, any bias towards Amsoil products may be more than coincidence. That said, it does contain some useful information on the types of tests run, and on the operating challenges unique to motorcycle engines.
