I can certainly understand the feeling safer part because of the brake release, but it is just on the front brake and not both. And friction locks don't actually "lock", you can still easily just roll back the throttle any time you like, easy-peasy. I enjoy the throttlemeister friction lock because I can dial in whatever resistance I need for the terrain. A slight twist on the end gives me just a little resistance so that I don't "burp" the throttle over every bump on the road. It's whatever makes you comfy and gets the job done.

Throttle Control

Has anyone tried this throttle lock? How well does it work? I have had the throttlemeister on prevous bikes but found it hard to set without reaching over with my left hand.

Too bad you didn't take a look at the Break Away product. I think it's the best on the market. Throttlemeister is good and the Kuyrakin ISO grips with their throttle lock is a pretty nice setup as well.
