Inexpensive Starter Replacement

Anybody got any news on this inexpensive S/motor..

Is it worth ordering as some have had early probs.

Just wondering as there are no Raving Reports yet....
not yet still waiting for mine to arrive

I got a starter from advance auto but I haven't put it on yet. Some people on the .com site have done this mod with success others not so successful.

Before you buy a replacement starter make sure you know which type you should be looking at.
The Rocket requires a ccw direction motor. not all the part numbers listed where for such,
I first purchased a 17794 starter this is a brand new after market product not a denso unit.it is cw which is no good, and the bolts do not line up,
the second unit i got was a 17610 which is ccw and bolted straight in .It is also a rebuilt after market unit. i think the denso unit is 280-0174.

The 17610 starter is starting well and seems strong, time will tell. I can always go back to the stock one if it fails but i have heard good things so far.

Thanks Wayne if you had not told us about a bigger starter i for one may not have looked.
Thanks Scott for getting these parts shipped over to me .

Picked up the 17610 at Advance Auto this week. Ordered it online for pickup at the store 2 blocks away. A promo code, JA21, saved me 15% but ran out on 1/25.

I also had ordered the other starter that Wayne Tripp had originally recommended.

Here they are side-by-side. From left to right, the 17610, the original recommendation, and my OEM starter pulled from the bike.

I decided to install the 17610 and it was an easy switch out of the motors. Didn't bother with the solenoid.

Of note is the little nub that fits into the slot on the base plate. The 17610 has the notch in exactly the right spot.

Finished the install and hit the starter. Spun over like mad and fired right up in 30 degree temps. The new starter motor sounds a lot different.

The 17610 fits a 1999 Toyota Solara 2.2L with 5SFE motor.

Specs on the 17610:

Diameter: 55 mm
Direct Drive: No
Drive Tooth Quantity: 13
Gear Reduction Ratio: 4.3
Gear Reduction: Yes
Horsepower Rating: 1.8774 hp
Kw Rating: 1.4 kw
Mounting Bolt(s) Included: No
Mounting Shims Included: No
Nose Cone Type: Open
OE Manufacturer: Nippondenso
Overall Length: 215 mm
Rotation: Counterclockwise
Solenoid Attached: Yes
Starter Finish: Same as OE
Starter Type: Nippondenso Offset Gear Reduction
Voltage: 12 v

I paid a total of $128 for mine including the core charge.

P.S. also replaced the negative battery cable with 4 gauge wire. Easy mod.

I just ordered two of them from advance on line. Promo code P20, 20% discount. also has a 20 dollar core charge on each. Checked with the local Advance auto parts and even with it getting shipped to my door I can change the motors out and reassemble the starters, take them down to them and they will credit the 20 dollars each back to my PayPal account. If it weren't for the 14.50 sales tax I would have two beast starters for just under 200 bucks. Not bad if you ask me. I think some of the states don't get charged tax which will work great if you want tobeef yours up for just under 100 bucks each. Oh and thats shipped to my door free.

How many hours or start ups would a OEM starter would resist? I have a 2007 with only 6800 miles on , would be nessesary? Just a question ... I always buy replacements because where I live it s always a problem but need to know if it common from s motors to fail, thanks

No its not comon at all for one to fail. This mod helps us who live in colder climate areas as it just adds a 1.4kw motor on the OEM starter verses the 1.2 that comes with it. It just spins th emotor over faster. Most of the High horspower guys are doing it and the standard HP guys are finding it just advantageous to do. Very few starter have ever failed completly. I suspect the ones that actually have problems are suffering from the human error fact that happens in all things manufactured.

Ok thank you , Where I live I don t get snow at least 40 so don t have that trouble ! Thanks

I'll have to get of my bum and fit mine one of these day it has been sitting there for a while now to many project to play with not enought hour in day
