Help Please..Check Engine Light/No Gear Indicator

Thanks Warp! I tried looking under Richards posts, and apparently there are over 100 pages....wow. Pics would be great!

I don't know if you have Tuneecu, but do you happen to know if it reads fault codes, and if it can clear them?

Just saw this. Don't think I took any pics but its easy to find and remove. At the rear or the engine on the left side is a small plate about 2" across. It has a lead coming out the top going into the small triangular side plate. Just remove the 2 bolts - you might need to loosen the screw holding the chrome piece running back to the rear foot peg. Take the plate off ( you don't need to unplug any wires so you can't pull it right off) and give it a good clean. You should be able to see the circular contact piece that actually registers what gear you're in. Inside the recess in the engine block you will feel a small spring loaded plunger that can push in. This is what is moved when you change gears and rubs against the contacts in the sender unit. Clean that too. I pulled mine out and roughed it up a little. I also gave a squirt of WD40 in the little hole before putting the plunger back in.

Then just bolt the sender back on. You might want to switch on the ignition before snugging it up to make sure it's contacting correctly. I had to twist mine slightly when tightening to get it to register clearly. Neutral light was flickering the first time I did it.

Located where they said here is a shot of it the copper contact points are what sends the signal to tell the ecu what gear the bike is in.



I use scotchbrite to cleamn mine. sometimes all you have to do is loosent the bolts a ltittle and rotate it as its of just a little bit. other times it a bad conection. If you pull it off be caefull there is a little plunger on a spring that contacts it you don't want to lose it or the spring picture below..



Some people might get on you for not spending days in the search area trying to find the several time I posted it. but do not let it bother you it was easier for me to re post it the search for it myself.

I believe some of what these sites are for is helping fellow Rocket owners where others believe its here to bust peoples nads

Thanks for all of the help, instructions, and PICS.

When I was driving home this afternoon, I noticed that the gear indicator was reading all gears as per normal. When I got home, I hooked up the Tuneecu (thank God for freeware), and sure enough, it was the gear indicator. I followed Richard's and Warps instructions and visual aids, and I cleaned the sensor and its housing. It was definitely dirty and had grease smeared across the sensor and its housing. I reinstalled and ensured that there was a good connection prior to tightening down. I cleared the fault out of Tuneecu and preceded to shift though the gears, cranked her back up and no more check engine light.

We will see tomorrow if it rears its ugly head. If it does it again, I guess I have a bad connection, or faulty sensor.

I was just telling the wife, if it were not for you guys supporting fellow captains, I would have burned fuel, time, and potentially a lot of money going to the dealer (90 miles away).

not having had the issue myself and maybe warp or richard may agree or disagree but I would possibly be putting some dielectric grease on the contacts to keep them in good condition especially as if water or dust can get in there I remember Richard telling me his was full of muddy water (If I remember correctly)

I agree when it comes to electrical connections dialetric grease can save a lot of hassle.

Yes I did have water in there. I mentioned previously that you should have a good look at the "O" ring too. Certainly some grease is a good idea.

Thanks...will do on the grease. I have never used dialectic grease before (I'm a newbie; but hey I know how many CC's the Rocket has ), so i will have to go by the parts store this weekend. I see it mentioned on the forum quite a bit.

By the way, notice the spot on the GPS for 6th gear? **** shame they didn't want to use it.
